Postdoc/developer for Digital Twin-oriented Virtual Research Environments and Infrastructure Services
University of Amsterdam
We are looking for two researchers on the subject of ‘digital twins-oriented virtual research environment and infrastructure services’. The positions will be funded by the NWO project LTER-LIFE. LTER-LIFE is a large-scale research infrastructure in the making; it aims to provide a state-of-the-art e-infrastructure to study and predict how changes in climate and other human-induced pressures affect ecosystems and biodiversity.
One of the grand challenges in ecology is to understand and predict how ecosystems are impacted by changes in environmental conditions, and external pressures. Predicting how complex ecosystems will behave under different scenarios requires combining empirical and observational data. To truly predict how ecosystems and landscapes will respond to current and future global change, we need to increase the availability of existing environmental long-term datasets, integrate disparate types of ecological data, and create a user-friendly and secure cloud-based digital modelling and simulation platform that can be used to link data to models and scenarios. This can be done by creating Digital Twins of entire ecosystems.

A Digital Twin is “a digital replica of a living or non-living physical entity”. Building Digital Twins of ecosystems has only recently become possible as Big Data, artificial intelligence (AI) applications and analytics, advanced computing infrastructure, and the FAIR principles have been developed and made available for ecology, ecosystem restoration, and biodiversity science. This approach brings together data scientists, informaticians, and ecologists in research communities around ecosystems. Detailed information on the LTER-LIFE project can be found here.
We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week for a period of 36 months. The preferred starting date is September 2023.

PhD Position - Adaptive security framework for microservices-based cloud applications
Inria (DiverSE team)
Microservices are an architectural model in which an application is decomposed into smaller, independent services that communicate with each other. Each microservice is responsible for a specific business functionality and can be deployed, scaled and maintained independently of the other services. This approach to software architecture allows for faster development, easier maintenance, and more resilient systems.

The recent evolution towards microservices-based web applications has led to an increased need for security practices to ensure their confidentiality, availability, and compliance with legal requirements.

Existing approaches proposed in the literature do not take into account contextual information when implementing a security mechanism (traffic encryption, OAuth2.0, OpenID Connect, etc.) to prevent security breaches (unencrypted data, insufficient access control, unauthenticated traffic, etc.) [1,2]. These approaches are rigid and become ineffective when the context of microservices changes. This change may be related to the user or microservice's location, user behavior, the load received on the microservice, interactions between different microservices, etc.

Knowledge of context is crucial to provide more effective security measures tailored to the specific needs of the web application. By being aware of its context, the application can dynamically adjust security measures to respond to the evolving threat landscape, ensuring that sensitive information and resources are protected at all times.

The aim of this PhD is to detect security-related anomalies in cloud applications following a change in context, in order to dynamically remedy them. This project falls within the context of software security.

PostDoc in detecting and modelling misinformation spread
University of Technology Sydney
With social media as its primary carrier, propaganda and disinformation spread wider than ever before. We are observing a flurry of damaging activity – from vaccine opposition groups riding a once-in-a-century pandemic to far-right groups pushing extremist and racial targeting content. This project develops novel approaches for mis-/dis-information diffusion modelling and automated source validity quantification estimation. The goal is to understand what drives the adoption of misinformation and it can be countered.
