Research Scientist - Algal Biology
Montana State University
The Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE) at MSU is seeking a highly motivated research scientist (or equivalent) to work on a Department of Energy (DOE)-funded research project focused on improving phototrophic biomass productivity for fuel and high value product generation.
In spite of the potential of biofuels derived from microalgae to displace a significant volume of fossil fuels, their production is not yet commercially practiced largely due unfavorable process economics. In particular, cultivation of microalgae has remained an expensive proposition due to frequent culture crashes and the high cost of CO2 supply. In collaboration with the University of Toledo and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, our MSU team aims to improve algal biomass productivity. MSU, in specific, is targeting productivity improvements using metabolic modeling combined with targeted genome editing; isolation and enrichment of organisms from the environment; the characterization and ultimately control of the microbial communities in high productivity algal cultures including microalgae, bacteria, archaea, viruses and zooplankton. Hence, we are looking for a research scientist M.S., Ph.D. level or equivalent experience.
The research scientist will work under Prof. Robin Gerlach and interact with Profs. Matthew Fields, Blake Wiedenheft, Ross Carlson and Brent Peyton. The research scientist will also closely collaborate with students and faculty at the Center for Biofilm Engineering at MSU.
Montana State University values diverse perspectives and is committed to continually supporting, promoting and building an inclusive and culturally diverse campus environment. MSU recognizes the importance of work-life integration and strives to be responsive to the needs of dual career couples.
