Researcher II (Senior Researcher) in marine biotechnology - microalgae
NORCE
The position as Researcher II is in Norway equivalent to Senior Researcher position and requires a PhD degree. Preferred starting date in this position is as soon as possible; the starting date can be adjusted by agreement.

The position will be linked to the research group Marine Biotechnology, located in Bergen. This reserach group works on biotechnological solutions for mainly marine applications, with two main research pillars: microalgae processes and enzyme technologies. The group works closely with industry and other research institutions, both nationally and internationally. It has a very strong link to the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Bergen (UiB), especially regarding research at their unique national infrastructure for microalgae process scaling (National Algaepilot Mongstad).
NORCE and UiB have a joint effort on research and innovation on sustainable microalgae production. Ambition is to develop a commercial, sustainable, and integrated production chain for food, feed, and chemicals from microalgae. The algae research team focusses on bioprospecting, strain selection and optimization, and microalgae cultivation and process optimization. Microalgae of the local fjords and cold coastal Arctic waters are investigated for cold-adapted species rich in omega-3 fatty acids and other components. For the most promising species, processes are developed and optimized in the lab, and targeted for scale-up at our pilot plant for further processing and testing.
Most of our research projects are interdisciplinary, aiming at a full production and processing chain of microalgae into final products, including integration of waste streams as nutrient sources. This encompasses captured CO2 from flue gas, but also recovery of nutrients from waste streams such as from aquaculture, and insect production. Together with other R&D and industrial partners, we produce and process microalgal biomass into food and feed for application trials.
