Postdoctoral Researcher
New Mexico State University
New Mexico State University is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to advance a DOE-funded project focused on developing and testing antivirulence strategies to protect algal crops from predation in the field. The researcher, working under the supervision of Dr. Alina Corcoran (http://www.corcoranalgaelab.com/), will be responsible for leading and supporting lab and field experiments. This is a 1-year full-time position with benefits (health, dental, life, disability, and retirement plan), starting in January 2024. Continued employment past the first year is dependent on performance.

The minimum qualifications for the position include:
• a Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or other relevant discipline,
• laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices,
• the demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context,
• the ability to work across both small and large teams, and a
• commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting

Preferred qualifications for the position include:
• experience cultivating phytoplankton and bacteria, and
• a strong working knowledge of algal-bacteria interactions.

Research Director

Either
·       algal cultivation,
·       algal biomass and algal culture medium characterization,
·       mathematical modeling of fluid dynamics, mass transfer or microbial metabolism,
or
·       the use of molecular techniques (DNA/RNA based analyses including nucleic acid extraction, amplification, sequencing, sequence analysis, phylogenetic and metagenomic analyses, differential gene expression analyses, etc.),
·       computational analysis of -omics datasets (bioinformatics),
·       microbial ecology,
·       analytical chemistry (-omics and mass-spectrometry would be a plus), and
·       reactor-based cultivation of microbes (algae/cyanobacterial cultivation experience is a plus)

The postdoctoral researcher(s)/research scientist(s) would participate in and lead research in community ecology, organismal interactions as well as algal biofuel and bioproduct development research in high pH/high alkalinity environments.

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Microbial Biomanufacturing

The Bioscience Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking postdoctoral candidates interested in physiology and engineering of microbial platforms for the production of fuels, chemicals, and materials. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists, postdoctoral researchers, technicians and students seeking to develop new bio-based technologies to address the Nation’s need for petroleum replacements. Specifically, this research will focus on the generation of sustainable aviation fuels and co-products from photosynthetic intermediates.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Strong technical background in one or more of the following areas: synthetic biology, molecular biology, microbiology, biomanufacturing, machine learning.
Demonstrated working experience in the field of microbial biomanufacturing, especially in microalgae/cyanobacterial platforms and/or cell-free systems.
Ability to independently design, conduct and troubleshoot experiments.
Excellent writing and communication skills, and willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
Education/Experience: Ph.D. in biology, microbiology, biotechnology or a related STEM field completed within the last five years or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.
Desired Qualifications:
Prior experience in genetic manipulation of photosynthetic microbes or development of cell-free production systems.
Experience with data analysis applied to biomanufacturing and chemical catalysis/bioconversion problems.
Knowledge of molecular/synthetic biology methods and microbial characterization assays (‘Omics, flow cytometry, microscopy, etc) or analytical methods for biomass characterization (HLPC, GC, etc.)
Strong programming skills and experience with machine learning analysis of ‘omics data.

These approaches will be applied for algae cultivation and processing as well as manufacturing of equipment and instrumentation. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and anticipated results. Work is reviewed at milestones or at completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Document findings, communicate results to team, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects. Provide directions to technicians and may lead a team of moderately experienced professionals. May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-organization and customer contact on difficult technical issues. Must be able to travel.
