Director of Animal Care and Adoption
Broward County
Bordering Southeast Florida’s Atlantic coastline, Broward County is the 18th most populous county in the nation and the 2nd largest in Florida. It is located between Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, forming the heart of Florida’s largest metropolitan area in which 5.6 million people reside. The County’s Animal Care and Adoption is a division within the Department of Environmental Protection and Growth Management and is an open admissions animal shelter, taking in around 14,000 dogs and cats each year and providing a full range of animal services covering a 1,220 square mile area.

The County seeks nationwide candidates who are committed to the No Kill philosophy. The Director of Animal Care and Adoption will have direct oversight of shelter operations, field services, community engagement and lifesaving programs, managing an assistant director and multiple managers who supervise approximately 70 full time employees.

Requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in animal sciences, business, public administration or a closely related field; AND six years in animal care related professions, such as the fields of shelter management, animal services program development and management, volunteer coordination and/or adoption, rescue and spay/neuter programs; including at least four years of progressively responsible supervisory experience.

Salary: $99,649 to $159,040 DOQ.

Director of Development and Communications

Director of Development and Communications - Non-Profit
Pets in Need (PIN) seeks a Director of Development and Communications with a minimum of five years of practical experience in managing a non-profit development effort to oversee its fundraising and communications operations during what is an especially pivotal time for the organization. Pets in Need’s current budget of approximately $2 million includes a combination of individual, corporate and foundation giving, and adoption and program revenue.
In 2018, Pets in Need expects to expand its operation when it assumes management of a second shelter in partnership with the City of Palo Alto while
continuing to operate in Redwood City. In addition, PIN is currently assessing the feasibility of launching a capital campaign to construct a new facility. If the feasibility study results are promising, PIN is likely to launch a $10-15M campaign later in the year. As a result, Pets in Need’s fundraising and marketing efforts must expand in unison with the overall growth of the organization.
The Director of Development and Communications will serve as a senior staff member and will report directly to the Executive Director. He/she will develop and execute a comprehensive program that includes broad-based fundraising from individuals, corporations, and foundations, marketing and communications efforts, oversight of the development and marketing committees, and supervision of two FTE’s, among other responsibilities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
Fund Development
• In partnership with the Executive Director and development staff (two FTE’s),
develop and execute a cost-effective and broad-based fundraising program to
secure general operating support from individuals, corporations, foundations and
organizations.
• Assist in the preparation of the department and the organization for a capital
campaign.
• Work with PIN’s Board and staff to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward current
and prospective donors.
• Identify major gift prospects and conduct personal meetings, ongoing follow-up and
requests for support.

• Manage current grant funders and conduct prospect research and outreach to identify and engage with potential grant funders.
• Draft and submit grant proposals for operational support and capital improvement projects.
• Draft appeal letters and other fundraising- and marketing-related publications.
• Identify new corporate partners and work with the Program Manager to expand
corporate relationships.
• Plan donor stewardship and cultivation events.
• Oversee donor data management efforts, ensuring data entry is accurate and
comprehensive and that acknowledgement letters are turned around within a 48- hour window.
• Assist the Executive Director in working with the Strategic Planning Committee.
• Present to the Pets in Need Board of Directors, as requested by the Executive
Director.
Communications
• Prepare and implement a communications and marketing plan that incorporates
social media, paid and earned media, direct mail and advertising to increase public
awareness about PIN.
• Work with marketing staff to maintain a visually appealing and user-friendly
website, Facebook and Instagram accounts and monthly e-newsletters that
promote PIN programs and events.
• Collaborate with staff on the adoption and volunteer management teams to
promote adoption events, volunteer achievements and organizational highlights.
• Conduct outreach to media contacts with focus on securing earned media
opportunities.
• Explore and possibly pursue opportunities for paid media.
• Serve as a spokesperson for Pets in Need, as requested by the Executive Director.
• Oversee the annual anniversary event, a “friendraiser” at the Redwood City shelter.
• Create and implement cost-effective events that promote Pets in Need.
• Produce an annual report at the conclusion of each fiscal year.
Additional
• Supervise the Marketing Coordinator and the Development Assistant.
• Staff the Development Committee and Marketing Committees, ensuring that committee members have a clearly defined strategy and the tools necessary to execute on that strategy.
• Attend and participate in board meetings, community meetings and other off-site activities.
• Based upon feasibility study results, direct Pets in Need’s capital campaign effort to generate funds to construct a new animal shelter in Palo Alto.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• No allergic conditions that would be aggravated when animals are present in the
work place.
• Ability to lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds for short
distances and to humanely restrain animals, when necessary.
Educational Experience, Abilities and Qualities Required:
• Interest in animal welfare and commitment to expanding protections for abused
and neglected animals;
• Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree and/or CFRE preferred;
• Track record of success in building fundraising programs and achieving annual
fundraising goals;
• Campaign experience required;
• Experience in cost-effectively managing fundraising events and programs is
preferred;
• Proven ability to maintain poise and to manage multiple assignments efficiently;
• Must be a strong writer;
• Articulate and willing to serve as a public figure for the organization;
• Ability to build partnerships and gain consensus with co-workers, volunteer leaders
and peers;
• Highly organized and detail-oriented;
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, CRM
databases, and social media.

Typical Duties

Identify fundable projects and secure support from private, local, state and federal sources. Prepare grant applications and reports. Network with current and potential funding sources to maintain an active knowledge of the region's philanthropic community. Identify and maintain network of potential donors to support the department's fiscal goals. Solicit corporate prospects and maintain relationships with current corporate contributors. Meet with representatives of funding sources to innovate new projects and programs that meet the needs of the funder, the community or raise the profile of Animal Services. Develop initiatives and events that drive fundraising and engage community in the humane treatment of animals.

Perform administrative duties. Involves: Create and edit fundraising collateral and submit proposals and grant packages in final format. Ensure that expenditures comply with grant or funder provisions. Manage computer database system to maintain accurate and updated member and donor information. Prepare, monitor, submit and justify division budget.

Supervise assigned staff. Involves: Schedule, assign, instruct, guide, review and check work. Appraise employee performance. Provide training and development. Enforce personnel rules and regulations, department policies, and work standards. Counsel, motivate and maintain harmony. Interview applicants. Recommend hiring, termination, transfers, discipline, or other employee status changes.
