In this role you will:
Assist in developing planning studies, technical memorandums, and reports in support of new and updated plans, programs, regulations, and proposed projects.
Assist with review of development applications, including variances, subdivisions, rezonings, and associated permits.
Research planning topics through document review, data collection and analysis, and other methods.
Assist with community engagement and outreach when developing and reviewing plans, including working with community groups, government agencies, developers, and elected officials.
Have primary or secondary knowledge in the following planning specializations:
Land use (primary focus)
Project communication
Transportation
Environmental
Landscape architecture
Other similar specializations
Travel to client offices and other project related locations as necessary.

Planning Intern

This is a paid office based position that will offer the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals and gain valuable experience working on diverse projects, including housing plans, comprehensive plans, park and recreation planning, zoning administration, urban design, blight evaluation and more.
The work you may do • Assist with project research and creation of community planning documents using Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and ArcGIS Online • Create maps and illustrations for planning projects using Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and ArcGIS Online • Assist with in-person and online public engagement activities • Collect, review, interpret, summarize, and present planning data • Work as part of a team of planners, in collaboration with other design professionals to serve internal and external client needs Qualifications What you bringSkills & Knowledge / Education & Experience: • Currently enrolled in pursuit of a Bachelor’s of Science or Master’s Degree in an accredited planning program. The ideal candidate is a sophomore or junior pursuing their bachelors or a 1st year grad student in pursuit of their Masters • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop), ESRI ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online • A desire to explore a profit-oriented career as a consultant in a multi-disciplinary design firm • Interest in the forces and policies that affect community design and function • Interest in engaging face-to-face with clients, the general public, and stakeholders in the process of community planning • The ability to travel and attend occasional evening meetings for MSA’s clients served out of the St. Paul office • This position requires you to have authorization to work in the United States for any employer.
