Job Summary/Purpose: The Infection Preventionist I reports to the Director of Infection Prevention. Under general supervision, the Infection Preventionist I utilizes evidence-based practices/guidelines with the ultimate goal of preventing healthcare-associated infections. This role collects, analyzes and reports surveillance data for healthcare-associated infections and identifies and investigates clusters or outbreaks of infection. This role evaluates patient care and hospital infection prevention practices in MUSC outpatient and inpatient settings to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines, hospital policies/procedures and evidence-based practices. The IP I reviews policies, protocols, and scientific literature and educates MUSC staff, patients and visitors on infection prevention recommendations. The IP I works collaboratively with other departments to ensure staff, patient and visitor public health safety. The IP I will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams for implementation of evidence-based guidelines and performance improvement and implements plans, projects and programs to reduce healthcare-associated infections.

Infection Preventionist (IP) is a part of a team responsible for implementation of the infection prevention program and will perform ongoing surveillance and epidemiologic review of patients, employees and the environment for the facility/facilities. The IP uses epidemiological principles and methods for identification and prevention of infectious diseases to patients and healthcare workers. The IP is focused on surveillance, which is done to identify areas of risk and develop evidence-based strategies to prevent the development of hospital acquired infections (HAIs). These strategies include staff and physician in-services as well as educational tool development. The position manages, studies, and educates on all aspects of hospital functions related to surveillance, prevention and control of infections for all patient populations.
The IP works collaboratively with the data support specialist/analyst and the Subject Matter Expert (SME)/Manager to coordinate data collection and analysis and assists in the overall risk assessment of the inpatient and outpatient population. The position provides support in the implementation of guidelines, policies and initiatives. The IP is active in the identification, classification and reporting of all HAIs and when indicated, community acquired infections. The position will adhere to reporting standards as set forth by CMS, CDC and other regulatory bodies and will enter this information accurately and timely into National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) system. The Infection Preventionist I will work with the local and state health department to identify trends in reportable diseases.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree - Health-related field (e.g. medical lab technology, microbiology, etc.). Master's degree preferred. Master's in Public Health highly preferred.
• 3 years - Experience in a healthcare field. No experience in Infection Prevention required.
