The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST)
Fully funded PhD position on the topic of "Hybrid LCA-ABM of dairy farming systems including nonlinear optimization".
The thesis is part of the project SIMBA (Simulating economic and environmental impacts of dairy cattle management using agent-based models) funded by the Luxembourgish National Research Fund (FNR) and the Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
The objective of the SIMBA project is to develop a decision support system (DSS) that incorporates behavioural models of dairy farmers using an ABM decision tool, which will be able to test different herd management strategies and to assess their environmental impacts. The DSS will build on top of an existing ABM simulator (called MUSASIM) for agriculture programmed in Java, developed in the framework of a past project.
The DSS will be tested in the case of dairy farms in Wallonia and Luxembourg.
In the framework of the SIMBA project, the selected PhD candidate will in particular be in charge of the enhancement of MUSASIM to take into account the herd management component and to integrate in it a farm optimisation model.
S(he) will interact with the University of Liège (Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech – GxABT), where another PhD student will work on the same project and will be in charge of the application of machine learning algorithms to predict phenotypes related to herd management and environment.
Since a data analysis based on machine learning (ML) algorithms is foreseen in both parts of the work developed at GxABT and LIST, knowledge of ML applied to practical problems will be important and relevant for the work to be performed by the PhD candidate. A minimal knowledge of Economics principles will also be relevant for a correct implementation of the farms’ business model in the calculation platform. In these tasks the candidate will be assisted by the PhD advisor and other staff members at LIST, who have already experience on similar problems.

PhD position in Efficient Deep Learning for Mapping and Localization of Intelligent Vehicles

The Intelligent Vehicles group at the TU Delft is seeking a PhD candidate with an interest in performing cutting edge research in the active and exciting research area of self-driving vehicles, in collaboration with TomTom.
Currently, highly automated vehicles commonly rely on detailed 3D maps created with SLAM algorithms and LIDAR data for accurate self-localization. However, these representations do not scale, are sensitive to changes in the environment, are sensor specific, and also computationally intensive. TomTom’s research product RoadDNA takes an alternative approaches to represent the road environment more efficiently. However, it uses a hand-engineered representation, which is mainly target at highway environments sensed with LIDAR at a fixed compression rate.
This PhD will instead develop optimized representations for mapping and localization in complex urban environments by learning robust semantic feature representations through end-to-end weakly-supervised deep-learning. The novel methods can additionally support rough priors provided by GPS, structural priors from aerial imagery and existing map data, or even temporal context. A learned representation can thus focus on features which matter most in the local area, and henceforth reduce its size, and increase localization efficiency. Higher-level features are additionally more robust against environmental changes, and could be transferred between multi-modal sensor setups or multiple viewpoints.

The ISI Foundation is looking for candidates to fill an open postdoctoral position in Machine Learning and Network Science with a particular focus on renormalization and dimensionality reduction of complex networks.
The appointed researcher will work within the areas of Computational Social Science, Mathematics and Foundations of Complex Systems and Machine Learning.
A key problem in these areas is the following: how can we infer the behavior of a system without the need to actually simulate the whole system? This is especially relevant for very large networks (e.g. social networks) or when we don’t have the full network at hand (i.e., when simulating the propagation of a disease in a medium-tolarge population).
The project in which the appointed researcher will be involved aims at developing new theoretical and computational tools that will enable solving the aforementioned challenge, opening the path to novel applications in data science, computational epidemiology, ecology and computational social sciences, in addition to the theoretical possibilities that such a framework entails.
Apart from generally contributing to the analysis and modelling of temporal and multilayer networks, the post-doc will extend the effort made by researchers of the areas about learning new network representations while reducing their dimensionality, in other terms to build embedding of temporal networks.
Specifically the researcher will:
- Use multilinear algebra, spectral methods, machine learning techniques (such as neural networks) to extract temporal and structural patterns from networks.
- Develop new representations of both temporal and multilayer networks
- Work on the interaction between dynamical processes and those new representations.
The work is expected to have a strong theoretical component but will be anchored in a data-driven approach.

The ISI Foundation is looking for an exceptional candidate to fill an open postdoctoral position focusing on the development of new algorithmic data analytics and modelling tools for the study of the networks representing structural and functional brain connectivity. The appointed researcher will work in a multidisciplinary area at the intersection between computational neuroscience, algorithms for network science, graph theory, and topological data analysis under the supervision of Dr. Francesco Bonchi and Dr. Giovanni Petri .
The appointed researcher is expected to design, implement and validate novel graph metrics able to capture temporal, multi-scale and multi-layer patterns in large-scale neuroimaging datasets. The focus will be on the robustness of such metrics under different preprocessing pipelines, on the description of functional graphs as uncertain graphs and on the scalability of information theoretical measures to large-scale brain networks. The aim is to leverage the novel tools to characterize and study the evolution and disruption of brain networks in ageing and in neurodegenerative diseases. As such, the duties of the researcher will range from experimental studies to theoretical and methodological work including the development and testing of computational algorithms.
