PhD Student / Post-Doc in Software Testing at TU Delft
Delft University of Technology
For the TestShift project we are seeking enthusiastic Master students interested in obtaining a PhD degree in the cross-section of software testing, human computer interaction, an... d socio-technical factors in software engineering. The prospective PhD student is expected to do high-quality research: coming up with creative solutions, working diligently to iron out all details and getting a deeper understanding, interacting with peers around the world, but also interacting with practitioners from both the open source and industrial domain to evaluate your research.

With software failures costing the economy USD 1.7 billion in 2017 alone, the goal of TestShift is to understand and radically change how software engineers consider their testing activities. Firstly, we want to understand their considerations, the trade-offs they make when deciding (not) to test (anymore). This complex matter is likely not the decision of an individual, but rather originating from a set of complex socio-technical circumstances. Secondly, with the help of very specialised test analytics TestShift aims to inform developers and development teams of their testing efforts and indicate potential shortfalls, with the aim of steering software developing organisations to test more effectively and efficiently.

TestShift is rooted in empirical software engineering and will make use of research methods such as ethnography, longitudinal field studies and case studies.

PhD Students in Cyber-Phisical Systems at TUDelft
Delft University of Technology
Emerging Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)—from robotics, transportation, to medical devices—play a crucial role in the quality of life of European citizens and the future of the Europ... ean economy. Increasing automation to such an extent, however, gives rise to many challenges, at the crux of which lies the hardware and software symbiosis. COSMOS proposes to overcome the strain on developing and evolving high-quality, dependable CPS by employing two key technologies: DevOps and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These technologies offer the potential to address CPS development, verification, and evolution.

For this project, we are seeking enthusiastic Master students interested in obtaining a Ph.D. degree in the cross-section of DevOps, software testing, simulation-based validation & verification (V&V), software evolution, and software quality. The prospective Ph.D. student is expected to do high-quality research: coming up with creative solutions, working diligently to iron out all details and getting a deeper understanding, interacting with peers around the world, but also interacting with practitioners from both the open-source and industrial domain to evaluate the research.

PhD Opportunities in Explainable AI for Software Engineering
Monash University
Motivation: In today’s increasingly digitalised world, software defects are enormously expensive. In 2018, the Consortium for IT Software Quality reported that software defects co... st the global economy $2.84 trillion dollars and affected more than 4 billion people. The average annual cost of software defects on Australian businesses is A$29 billion per year. Thus, failure to eliminate defects in safety-critical systems could result in serious injury to people, threats to life, death, and disasters. Traditionally, software quality assurance activities like testing and code review are widely adopted to discover software defects in software products. However, ultra-large-scale systems, such as, Google, can consist of more than two billion lines of code, so exhaustively reviewing and testing every single line of code is not feasible with limited time and resources.

Aim. This project aims to create technologies (i.e., explainable AI for predicting and preventing software defects) that enable software engineers to produce the highest quality software systems with the lowest operational costs. To achieve this, this project will invent an end-to-end explainable AI platform that leverages advanced machine intelligence techniques (e.g., Deep Learning, Statistics, ML, Optimization) in order to (1) understand the nature of critical software defects like vulnerabilities; (2) predict; (3) highlight vulnerable code; (4) explain and visualise the characteristics of vulnerabilities; (5) suggest potential patches to automatically fix vulnerabilities; and (6) integrate such platform into GitHub.

Postdoc Research Fellow for Machine Learning and Optimization
University of Exeter
An exciting opportunity to work with Dr Ke Li on a prestigious UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship. You will create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking world cla... ss research in evolutionary computation, machine learning, complex networks and graph theory and applications in various engineering domain including, but not limited to, software engineering, water engineering, renewable energy and healthcare.

The major purpose of the job is to create a revolutionary general-purpose optimisation paradigm, placing adaptive automation at the heart of the development process. Instead of developing a domain-specific optimisation algorithm well-crafted for certain given optimisation problems, this project aims to take an innovative step forward and develop a transfer optimisation system (TOS) that enables an adaptive automated optimisation across problems. Based on novel synergies between nature-inspired optimisation (in particular, evolutionary computation) and machine learning (especially emerging transfer learning and reinforcement learning), the TOS will learn knowledge from the experience of solving various complex optimisation exercises. It will then autonomously and selectively transfer such knowledge to new and unseen optimisation tasks. Thus, making new problem-solving process(es) more effective and efficient.
