Coastal Ecology Internship

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic intern in Dr. Ron Baker’s lab

This in... ternship is designed to facilitate an in-depth understanding of ecological sampling techniques, subsequent sample processing, and their practical applications. As such, interns will develop their skills in data collection and gain valuable field experience.

The position will be a full-time 6-month internship with a 3-month probationary period, and the potential for extensions based on performance. Preferred start date is June 2, 2025, but can be flexible for the right candidate. Salary is $16.50/hr.

This is a full-time, 1-year position with a 6-month probationary period, and the potential for extension based on performance and funding availability. The candidate will play a crucial role in project management,
field data collection and analysis, and associated reporting.

Qualifications:
• Master's degree in marine science, ecology, environmental science, or a related field, or
equivalent experience
• Experience in ecological research and fieldwork
• Proficiency in data entry and basic data analysis
• Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork in potentially challenging conditions
• U.S. citizenship or residency

Preferred Qualifications (one or more of):
• Experience in project management
• Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and applications
• Experience with ecological data analysis in R
• Experience operating small vessels
• Experience with technical writing

The preferred start date is June 2, 2025, but flexibility is possible for the ideal candidate. Salary is $20/hr. Post Doc- Seagrass Biology and Ecology
USM Gulf Coast Research Laboratory
The Coastal Ecology and Seagrass Biology Lab at The University of Southern Mississippi, led by Dr. Kelly Darnell, seeks a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in seagrass biolog... y and ecology for studies to include trends in seagrass distribution and condition, reproductive ecology and physiology, and restoration. The successful candidate will have flexibility to design and execute their own research, will assist with ongoing research efforts throughout the Gulf of Mexico, and will have extensive professional development and networking opportunities.
 
Applicants should have experience with a range of statistical methods and spatial analysis tools, experience working on small vessels and in shallow coastal ecosystems, strong writing and presentation skills, and interest in exploring and restoring seagrass ecosystems.
 
The individual will be supervised by Dr. Kelly Darnell and will be based at USM’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs, MS, where they will work with a broad network of collaborators across career stages, backgrounds, and areas of expertise, including researchers, natural resource managers, and other stakeholders. GCRL was established in 1948 and is one of the oldest and largest marine labs in the Gulf of Mexico with 200+ faculty, staff, and students and state-of-the-art research facilities that support USM’s designation as an R1 University.

State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection
The Beaches, Inlets, and Ports Program (BIPP) Compliance Assurance Internship with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection provides students and recent graduates hands-... on experience in environmental compliance for coastal construction projects. This 12-14 week unpaid internship, based at the Bob Martinez Center in Tallahassee, FL, allows for full-time (40 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week) participation with potential academic credit.
Interns assist in monitoring, analyzing, and ensuring adherence to environmental regulations.

Key responsibilities include:
- Environmental Monitoring & Fieldwork: Review reports (e.g., turbidity, wildlife impact), verify compliance, conduct site visits, document findings, attend regulatory meetings, and assist in audits.
- Data Management & Analysis: Maintain compliance records in OCULUS and BCMS, analyze environmental data trends, and process regulatory documentation.
- Regulatory Research & Reporting: Review environmental laws, assist in permitting processes, develop compliance training materials, and contribute to policy recommendations.

Program Structure:
- Week 1: Orientation, software training, and permit overview.
- Weeks 2-10: Project work, compliance monitoring, and fieldwork.
- Weeks 11-14: Capstone presentation and career discussions.
Qualifications:
- Education: Enrolled in Environmental Science, Biology, Engineering, or related fields.
