WIC Regional IBCLC Specialist-Boston Region (Contractor)

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC Program) is seeking an experienced International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) to provide direct breastfeeding support and education to high-risk pregnant individuals and breastfeeding parent/baby pairs (dyad), in collaboration with breastfeeding peer counselors, at local WIC programs. Reporting directly to the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program Coordinator, the WIC Regional IBCLC Specialist will provide immediate consultation with WIC Peer Counselors (PC), co-facilitate the mentoring and guidance of peer counseling staff and provide staff training in clinical lactation topics.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Acts on referrals from PCs and other WIC staff regarding complex breastfeeding challenges beyond their scope of practice.
• Co-facilitate the mentoring and guidance of peer counseling staff to help build skills in breastfeeding counseling.
• Provide staff training in clinical lactation topics to WIC Nutrition Staff at the Local WIC Program and/or at WIC’s Learning Center.
• Participate in statewide meetings of the Breastfeeding Task Force and peer counselor trainings.
• Assesses and counsels the dyad with complex breastfeeding challenges and contributes towards the development of a care plan.
• Communicates care plan to the rest of the WIC breastfeeding team, as appropriate.
• Refers parent to their or their baby’s healthcare provider(s) for further assessment and medical care as needed.
• May promote breastfeeding within the community.
• Maintains IBCLC credential.

Registered Nurse Maternal/Child Health Visiting Nurse

Job Summary
• Provides skilled family-centered nursing care to clients in the home; supervises Family (Home) Health Aides and Family Advocates, completes client assessments, develops and implements Individual Plan of Care, evaluates same, functions within the community as liaison between the Agency, its clients, other providers and the people of the community.

Essential Job Functions
• Conducts home visits to provide skilled nursing services, completes client assessments, generates individual plans of care for each client, implements and evaluates same.
• Generates requests for doctors’ orders and informs physician of client progress, changes in status, and discharge.
• Carries out doctors’ orders and treatments.
• Documents pertinent post and current findings and interventions in the clinical record in accordance with professional standards and legal requirements.
• Supervises Family Health Aides, interprets plans to such personnel and makes home visits with them to their clients not less than every two weeks.
• Supervises Family Health Advocates not less than monthly, participates as a member of the client/family/FHA/MCHN team in delivering services to clients to promote healthy outcomes in family growth and development.
• Continuously develops knowledge of community resources and refers clients to appropriate resources.
• Participates in community liaison activities to represent Agency to clients, community, and other providers. This includes outreach and collaborative efforts.
• Continuously updates skills and knowledge base through attendance of Agency and other educational programs/resources, and meets state requirements for continuing education.
• Serves as an advocate for client/families in obtaining needed services
• Graduation from and accredited School of Nursing; current licensure in Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
• A minimum of two years clinical nursing experience, one of which is in Maternal and Child health.
