Funded PhD - BP wearables for cardiovascular outcomes and falls
University of Leeds There are multiple opportunities using these data sets for PhD study to develop and apply novel methodologies including:
Use of prognosis research methods to investigate w... hich summary measure of 24-hour Blood pressure profiles is predictive of falls, major adverse cardiovascular events, or all-cause mortality, over and above existing prediction tools. Use of machine learning techniques to investigate whether patterns of BP profile, may have superior predictive value over summary measures currently available. Use of propensity score matching to address confounding to undertake a causal inference study asking whether treatment change on basis of 24-hour BP recording changes outcomes. Use of individual patient data meta-analysis to combine data from three cohorts in a 2 stage IPD meta-analysis process.
Postdoctoral position on magnetostimulation for MRI and other applications
Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging/Harvard Medical School We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to work in our laboratory located in Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging in Charlestown, Massachusetts, on a number of pro... jects related to magnetostimulation in MRI and other applications. The laboratory is part of the Massachusetts General Hospital, and postdocs have a joint appointment with Harvard Medical School. The ideal candidate will have a background in mathematics, physics and/or engineering. Practical expertise with hardware development and/or complex computational modelling of biomedical systems is required, even if in a different field. A proven track record in publication is also required. Strong motivation to pursue a career in the field of biomedical engineering is essential. Magnetostimulation is the stimulation of peripheral nerves in the body by electric fields induced deep into tissues by time-varying magnetic field at kilohertz frequencies. Our team has developed computational models of whole-body nerve and tissue distributions that allow detailed predictions of magnetostimulation thresholds induced by MRI and other coils. The postdoc will extend those predictions using deep learning (computational modelling). Another task is to leverage our previous computational and experimental work to develop methods for selective excitation of nerves using arrays of magnetic coils (multi-channel magnetostimualtion). Possible applications of such an approach include non-invasive spinal cord stimulation or specific nerves for rehabilitation of traumatic and nerve injury.
