STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
The Strategic Initiatives department in University Relations and Alumni Relations leads the strategy development and fundraising efforts for signature priorities as identified by campus leadership. These initiatives are cross-cutting, multidisciplinary, and engage the partnership of a wide range of deans, directors, faculty, and staff colleagues. Current initiatives include the Berkeley Brain Initiative, Innovative Genomics Institute, and Berkeley Data Sciences. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for University Development and Alumni Relations, our team also works very closely with the Vice Chancellor for Research, and the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost.

BERKELEY DATA SCIENCES
A Data Science Planning Initiative was launched in 2015 in recognition of an emerging swell of data science research and teaching across the university, and that globally, data science is transforming society itself. With intellectual roots in computer science, mathematics, statistics, as well as a variety of other disciplines, data science at Berkeley touches a range as diverse as computational social science, global climate studies, public health, precision medicine, and urbanization; work on the ethical dilemmas and social implications of data analytics; and advances in foundations such as statistical machine learning and cloud computing platforms.

Our students have a critical need to be educated for a world in which dataintensive, computationally enabled work is becoming the norm. Our faculty in disciplines across the entire range of the university are seeing their fields shifting with higher demands for new analytical tools and discovery methods. At Berkeley this groundup transformation has been unfolding in a truly distinctive way, with many of the world’s leading scholars located here. The need for a focused strategy for data science has reached an intensity and breadth that requires us to take comprehensive, largescale, and rapid action.

Our vision for data science at Berkeley encompasses all of its components: pushing the conceptual frontiers of the field, applying established or emerging technology to new areas or domains, and studying the implications of the explosion of data and analysis for policy and society.

One of the most significant steps taken has been the recent creation of the Berkeley Data Sciences Division in 2017, led by founding Interim Dean David Culler. The goals of the new division include establishing undergraduate curricula for majors and minors; developing a faculty recruitment plan; fostering collaborative research and teaching among faculty who are experts in data science along with peers in fields to which that expertise must be applied; and developing a fundraising plan to support these goals in concert with overall campus campaign planning.

Job Summary:
The Senior Director will serve as an essential partner in establishing the new Data Sciences Division and its collaborations with colleges, school, and units across the university. Reporting to the Executive Director, Strategic Initiatives, the Senior Director will administer a highly successful fundraising campaign—with a focus on principal gifts—to support Data Science education and research across the Berkeley campus. He/she will identify new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and will cultivate, solicit and steward donor prospects alone or in partnership with campus leadership or peers. He/She will be the Berkeley Data Sciences lead on joint efforts with fundraisers in the colleges and schools across campus and in UDAR colleagues. The Senior Director will work closely with the Dean of Data Sciences and other campus leaders to develop funding strategies, proposals, marketing materials, as well as donor related programs/events as necessary for Berkeley Data Sciences.

This is an entrepreneurial assignment and environment. As such, we are seeking candidates who are motivated, aspirational, creative, sophisticated, flexible and can serve as a key advisor to senior campus leaders and thought partners.

Responsibilities

Make at least 10 - 15 substantive contacts per month (e.g., significant moves that advance a relationship). Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly. Strategies at this level typically require a high degree of creativity, strategy, and innovation.
• Develops, creates, writes, implements, and/or evaluates individualized marketing plans and/or strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major or principal gifts, gift planning, or corporate/foundation prospects (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation).
• Presents formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects or prepares senior campus executives to present proposals.
• Serves as resource for Berkeley Data Sciences, interacting with prospects, donors, staff and outside professionals to provide information, advice and counsel regarding assigned specialized program(s).

Director of Development, L&S College Relations #24490
University of California, Berkeley
About Berkeley
The University of California, Berkeley, is one of the world’s most iconic teaching and research institutions. Since 1868, Berkeley has fueled a perpetual renaissance, generating unparalleled intellectual, economic and social value in California, the United States and the world. Berkeley’s culture of openness, freedom and acceptance—academic and artistic, political and cultural—make it a very special place for students, faculty and staff.

Berkeley is committed to hiring and developing staff who want to work in a high performing culture that supports the outstanding work of our faculty and students. In deciding whether to apply for a staff position at Berkeley, candidates are strongly encouraged to consider the alignment of the Berkeley Workplace Culture with their potential for success at http://jobs.berkeley.edu/why-berkeley.html.

Departmental Overview
UC Berkeley is consistently ranked as the best public university in the world, and it places strongly in the top five institutions internationally, public or private. Berkeley's largest college, and one of the most prestigious academic units in the UC system, is the College of Letters & Science. L&S currently seeks a Director of Development in the science divisions to join its team of fundraising professionals. The individual chosen will be a leader of proven accomplishment, high energy, and resilient imagination who will lead and work collaboratively to further the College's development objectives. While the College seeks to hire adaptable generalists in its fundraising positions, the Director of Development can expect to be given responsibility for a portfolio of projects and prospects relating to either or both the Biological Sciences and Mathematical and Physical Sciences divisions.

In recent years the College has raised a record amount of private donations, with annual totals in the $50 to $60 million range. We are seeking a dynamic individual to help us sustain and surpass this level of excellence and accomplishment. A proven track record is essential, as is a willingness to work collaboratively with Berkeley faculty, colleagues across the campus, and particularly with ambitious academic deans. Candidates must bring a history of building strong relationships with donors and an instinct to go the extra mile to engage new donors and to help existing supporters deepen their relationship with the College in ways that are meaningful and motivating.

This is a complex position that will provide unparalleled opportunities for growth. On December 31, 2013, Berkeley successfully completed a $3 billion capital campaign, exceeding the goal of that seven-year effort. The College of Letters & Science was an integral part of this success, with well over $425 million of new funding secured during the campaign for the academic departments of the College and the myriad of research programs led by its faculty. The divisions of Biological Sciences and Mathematical and Physical Sciences are considered among the best in the nation, if not the world. Recent Nobel Prizes and Breakthrough Prizes, as well as the launch of new institutes and centers, mean that there is great collaboration with faculty to address the demands that come with great success.

The new Director of Development will be part of a team that defines new opportunities for the current fundraising campaign, still in the quiet phase, to help Berkeley sustain academic excellence in an era when philanthropy will be crucial to our success. This is an opportunity to join a solid, successful, forward-thinking fundraising effort in one of the most rewarding intellectual environments in the world. We welcome applications from candidates who want to help us define the new era of greatness in public higher education.

• Develop pipeline through discovery, cultivation and solicitation of significant annual fund donors who can eventually become major donors.

• Develop and execute long- and short-term strategies to secure gifts from individuals, foundations and other entities in support of the College’s mission and strategic plan.
• Manage relationships with some of the University’s most important donors.
• Instigate and manage 1-2 events each year. Collaborate with members of the College Relations team on other activities (such as events, gift recognition and reporting, etc.) that support the College’s major gift activity.
