PALS Coordinator
Urban Resource Institute
The Urban Resource Institute is the largest provider of shelter to survivors of domestic violence in NYC (and the country). Our program, PALS (People and Animals Living Safely) specifically helps people with pets, who often have few options when fleeing from DV situations.

About the position: the PALS Coordinators are the team members who work directly with survivors, helping them get into shelter and then supporting them through their limited timed stay. We also will support them as they transition into new housing or different shelter options.
The position is a hybrid position. This position is responsible for the pet owning clients at three separate sites in Brooklyn. Monday-Friday 9A to 5P. It's expected this position will have to go in 3 times a week to shelter and then work from home on their computer and cell (you would get a work cell and laptop for this!) the other days. $45k starting. There are health/dental/vision benefits, short term/long term disability benefits, a pension plan, and others I'm not super familiar with! The work tends to come in waves - we will have some very busy periods when lots of folks come into shelter at once, but then also will have times of slow down where we focus on the folks in shelter and data entry and breathe a little easier.

The work can be emotionally challenging but also pretty satisfying because in this position, the coordinator is a resource and support for a person who's trying to get back on their feet. Our clients are overwhelmingly kind and good folks who need advocates to have their back as much as possible in what is a fairly hostile DHS/HRA system.
Our team is incredibly supportive of one another and stresses taking days off/mental health days. We are a team of majority queer and Black/POC folks a lot of whom are native to NY/NYC. We hope to expand the team (which was only a team of two four years ago when I first started) with someone who fits into our culture and works hard to help our clients.

Legal Intern
The Waterfront Project
The Waterfront Project (WFP) stands up for Hudson County’s most vulnerable residents - the working poor, seniors, veterans, and those living with disabilities. Our work is designed to resist the forces of gentrification that displace long term, low-income residents from their communities.

Many of our clients face frivolous lawsuits, harassment, deplorable housing conditions, and illegal rent overcharges. We offer housing and financial counseling to empower our clients. When their problems can’t be solved without the intervention of a lawyer, our staff attorneys step in to provide free legal representation.

The Waterfront Project is also home to The Survivor Project, which provides legal representation and advocacy for survivors of sexual assault. We represent survivors in many areas of law, including domestic violence restraining orders, SASPA orders or protection, child custody matters for survivors with active restraining orders, VCCO (Victims of Crime Compensation Office) appeals, and advocacy in the criminal court system. We also engage in community outreach and education. It is our belief that every survivor’s voice deserves to be heard. We are committed to making this a reality. You can learn more about our work at www.thewaterfrontproject.org.

The WFP Internship Program provides students who are interested in law and social justice with an exciting, hands-on experience at an innovative nonprofit. Though our organization is growing rapidly, it is still all hands on deck at WFP, allowing our interns to play an integral role in our work.

Interns work alongside our Executive Director, Housing Counselors, and Staff Attorneys. They support our client-focused work as well as our nonprofit administrative functions.
