Cornell Botanic Gardens is hiring for a Natural Areas Steward to assist in the oversight of all aspects of the site management, restoration, and protection of on- and off-campus natural areas in support of the Botanic Gardens’ mission.

As a member of the stewardship crew:
• Assist in determining management needs, make recommendations, and execute stewardship activities and special projects.
• Evaluate trail conditions, report hazards, conduct trail maintenance, and respond to emergency alerts.
• Implement programs for site monitoring, invasive species control, nuisance wildlife abatements, and hazard tree removal.
• Collect natural resource information, and use GIS to monitor sites, species, or other conditions.
• Participate in Gardens programs to protect rare and scarce native plants in Natural Areas, propagate native plants of local genotypes, and restore them to protected habitats.
• Provide general support and technical expertise for preserve educational uses and participate in Botanic Gardens’ educational programs.
• Work with interns, volunteers, student workers, and other staff as a member of the natural area’s stewardship crew.
• Ensure that work is conducted in a safe manner.
• Substantial manual labor is involved requiring physical fitness, awareness of safety issues, and proper use of pesticides.

This position is full time (39 hours) for 10 months and half time (20 hours) for 2 months and will be located in Ithaca, New York.

Conservation Seed Bank Curator
Atlanta Botanical Garden
The Atlanta Botanical Garden invites applications for the position of Seed Bank Curator for the Southeastern Center of Conservation within the Department of Conservation & Research. The primary duties of this technician-level position are to:

Perform seed and pollen viability tests, upkeep plants in vitro via micropropagation and tissue culture, hone cryopreservation techniques, and clean and curate seeds, roots, and other plant derivatives for conservation, research and restoration. Refine laboratory protocols related to seed banking, micropropagation, and cryopreservation, maintain exceptional records, and update standard operating procedures accordingly. Train volunteers on standard operating procedures.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Update standard operating procedures as protocols are refined.
Assist with collection and curation of seed, pollen, roots, from the field, nursery, and greenhouse. Conduct germination trials, tetrazolium, and other seed viability tests. Image, score, and upkeep germination trials and pollen viability assessments. Demonstrate consistent excellence in performing laminar flow hood sterile techniques Monitor in vitro cultures and perform decontamination as needed. Prepare samples for x-ray and micro-CT viability tests. Prepare stock solutions and media for the laboratories. Summarize collection accession data and contribute tables to reports. Conduct routine maintenance of the facility and all laboratory equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent experience required.
Minimum of two years of seed bank or technical laboratory experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior experience with seed and pollen analysis, and tissue culture .
Experience with data analysis (e.g., ANOVA, multivariate analyses, etc.) and the use of statistical software (e.g., R, JMP, etc.).
Certification by the Society of Commercial Seed Technologists (SCST), Certified Viability Technologist (CVT), or Registered Seed Technologist (RST).
