Postdoc in Virology and Bioinformatics
Mississippi State University and/or Plum Island Animal Disease Center
A post-doctoral research associate position in Virology and Bioinformatics within the infectious diseases research group at Mississippi State University (MSU) is available immediately.

The responsibilities of the position will include: analysis of gene expression data to study regulation; become proficient in BSL-3 practice to work with foreign animal diseases, and publication of project results. The scope of work may include both laboratory (data acquisition) and analytic research activities. Research stations may include Mississippi State University (Mississippi State, MS) and/or Plum Island Animal Disease Center (Greenport NY).

The successful candidate will work on a collaborative project between MSU and USDA/ARS Plum Island Animal Disease Center that focuses on identifying host mechanisms of Foot-and-Mouth Disease carrier state divergence using genomics approaches. The ultimate goal of the research program is to train scientists who may join the workforce at the National Bio and Agro-defense Facility currently under construction at Manhattan KS. However, no commitment is required beyond the funded period of fellowship.

Qualifications: US citizens with a PhD in Virology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, statistics, is required. Experience in working with genome scale datasets and computational pipelines and databases is desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work well independently and in a team and a broad interest in Virology and infectious diseases and Bioinformatics is important. Competitive salary/stipend and benefits are available and will be commensurate with experience. The position is funded for two years, with the second year contingent upon success in the first one.

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Large Animal Nutrition

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences (LCS) at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine (MSU CVM) invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Large Animal Nutrition. This position is being offered as a Tenure Track faculty position.

The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic and innovative team that is committed to world-class research, outreach and training to meet the needs of the large animal industry. Candidates must have a veterinary medical degree (DVM or equivalent) and be eligible for licensing in the State of Michigan (an academic license option exists). American or European board certification (or eligibility) in veterinary nutrition is desirable. An advanced graduate degree (PhD desirable) or evidence of equivalent research experience and scholarly productivity is required.
The successful candidate is expected to dedicate 20% of the position to providing client-focused nutrition service as part of the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (VDL). The candidate in this appointment will have a 50% research appointment and will be expected to develop a nationally/internationally recognized, externally funded, collaborative program in fields related to Large Animal Nutrition. The remainder 30% of the appointment will be dedicated to DVM, post-doctoral and graduate training (residents and research-degree students).

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Nutritional Immunology
Michigan State University
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual interested in nutritional immunology to participate in a funded project aiming at studying the impact of oxidative stress on vaccination responsiveness in neonatal dairy calves. The project entails both field and in vitro experiments, combining immunologic, molecular biology, and lipidomic analyses to assess the immune response of calves under various conditions of oxidative stress.

This project is a collaboration between Dr. Angel Abuelo and Prof. Lorraine Sordillo from the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. More broadly, there is a substantial community of scientists conducting different comparative medicine and integrative biology research within the College of Veterinary Medicine. Also, the MSU core facilities offer an exceptional infrastructure for flow cytometry, genomics, bioinformatics, mass spectrometry, and proteomics.

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include working on research projects, supervising students in the laboratory, preparing manuscripts, and collaborating in grant proposal development in the area of cattle immunometabolism. It is expected that the research associate will devote the majority of his/her time to ongoing research projects at the mentors’ laboratories (60%) with a 10% time commitment supervising students, laboratory oversight, and teaching as opportunities arise. It is also the expectation that the remaining time of the position (30%) will be devoted to assisting and preparing extramural grant applications and preparing manuscripts and scientific review papers.

A DVM (or equivalent) or an Animal Science degree and a PhD in biological sciences is required. Training in immunology or molecular biology is a plus but not a requirement. Excellent communication skills, ability to work well in a team, and an interest in nutritional immunology is important. Competitive salary and benefits are available.

Graduate student opportunity- animal physiology
University of Vermont
The Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Vermont is looking for a Ph.D. student in Animal Physiology, with flexible starting time. The student will engage in research in antioxidation, metabolic physiology and mastitis in the mammary gland of dairy cows.
The candidates should have excellent academic records with a background in animal science, nutrition, physiology, molecular/cellular biology, endocrinology, or related field. A Master’s degree is preferred, but not required. He/she must be highly self-motivated and have a good work ethic. Working experience with large animals, or lab animals is highly desirable.

Project Title: Animal models for viral pathogenesis and oncolytic therapy

Project Description: The research focus is on the development of an immunocompetent humanized pig model for viral pathogenesis and oncolytic virus therapy studies. The candidate will study the fate of stem cells from healthy human tissues and tumors after transplantation in animals. The successful candidate will also study pathogenesis and oncolytic properties of wild-type and genetically modified Zika viruses.
