Medicine and the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maryland College Park, MD, invite applications from qualified individuals for a tenured/tenure-track faculty position in infectious diseases. This 9-month appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. A Ph.D. or Ph.D./DVM or equivalent degree with relevant Post-Doctoral training.
RESEARCH: Current focus is on host-pathogen interaction with emphases on virology, bacteriology, parasitology, immunology, microbial pathogenesis, and public health. The position requires the candidate to focus on important zoonosis involving animal and human health. The candidate with outstanding influenza or avian influenza research background in viral transmission, pathogenesis, immunity, viral-host interactions, and vaccine development are especially encouraged to apply.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with the potential to develop an internationally recognized research program relevant to antimicrobial resistance from all perspectives. The ideal candidate will develop a research program that includes animal, human, and environmental health risk‐assessment of antimicrobial resistance; evolution and molecular/genetic mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance; transmission and infectious threats of
resistance microbes; identification of novel therapeutic targets and development of novel treatment and vaccines.

The selected candidate will develop, maintain, and conduct a productive, extramurally funded research program that will strengthen current research goals of the department. The candidate can also provide expert advice to stakeholders related to antimicrobial resistance and its implications for animal and human health via outreach to spread knowledge and guide field practices. Candidates applying at the Assistant Professor level are expected to have a strong publication record. Candidates applying at the Associate Professor level must have an established research program with a strong record of accomplishment of active extramural funding, teaching, and scholarly activity.

COHA Translational Research Fellowship Opportunity in NC State Comparative Gastroenterology Lab
NC State Comparative Gastroenterology Lab
Eligible fellowship applicants will have a DVM or equivalent and have completed an AVMA-approved veterinary residency before the start of the fellowship. The Translational Research Fellowship provides 2 years of salary support at the NIH postdoctoral pay scale, plus a total of $2,500 in funds for travel or training-related expenses. Fellows must devote at least 75% effort to research. Fellows may supplement their stipend with up to 25% effort towards clinical work, if such work is in alignment with the research and career development plan.

The Comparative Gastroenterology (CGI) Lab led by Drs. Anthony Blikslager and Amanda Ziegler studies translational development of gut health using large animal models, primarily pigs. The research team is fully USDA- and NIH-funded for the next five years to study intensively the roles of nutritional inputs in the development of a healthy and disease-resistant intestinal microbiome, enteric nervous system (ENS), and epithelial barrier. Come to Dr Ziegler’s talk at 11:30am on Monday to hear more about our work!

Contact the primary mentor directly to discuss suitability for submitting a joint full proposal for fellowship funding. The full application must be submitted by 5 PM central time on January 8, 2020. Full fellowship applications will be reviewed by the COHA Clinician Scientist Education Subcommittee. Funding decisions will be announced by February 14, 2020 for an August 2020 start date. Four 2-year fellowships will be funded to start each year, beginning in the fall of 2020 through the fall of 2023 (16 fellowships total).
