PhD in Quantum System Testbed: Fibre-based coherent quantum communication
Eindhoven University of Technology
The candidate will investigate the implementation of quantum key distribution based on coherent optical transmission techniques. QKD can then be deployed beyond secure campus area networks towards the metro and long-haul scenarios. The candidate will investigate continuous-variable QKD using a variety of modulation formats (BPSK, QPSK, etc.). Within the rich ecosystem of integrated photonics, the candidate will investigate the system-level performance of the detection schemes and improved error-correcting/privacy amplification strategies to enhance the performance and extraction of final keys.

Note that the coexistence of quantum signals and classical coherent signals on the existing fibre infrastructure is key to the wide-scale deployment. Therefore, the development of high dimensional fiber based encoding should help to avoid deploying parallel fiber infrastructure for QKD and classical optical signals.

Qualifications:
PhD Candidates should have a Master's degree or equivalent technical experience

The successful candidate is expected to have experience and expertise in one or more of the following subjects:

-Experience with classical optical communication systems
-Experience in fibre-based quantum key distribution or cryptography
-Experience with error correction techniques
-Experimental and theoretical knowledge of quantum communication
-Experience with high-speed coding and programming GPUs/FPGAs
-Self-motivation in scientific research
-Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Find me anytime during the conference for a chat or video discussion.

PhD student
Chalmers University
Adaptive optical interconnects (
While today's optical interconnects operate under rather controlled environmental conditions, use cases where the environment is more demanding in terms of peak-temperature and temperature variations are now appearing. These include data centers, automotive networks, and radar systems. With resources enabled by the new project we are now expanding our team with a PhD student to work on optical interconnects in demanding conditions. The focus will be on the experimental analysis of the performance of the OI laser transmitters (fabricated in-house specifically for this project) across a very wide range of temperature in a realistic system environment.

Optical Data Center research interns
Nokia Bell Labs France
The Edge Cloud network. Future 5G applications will impose strict latency and dynamicity requirements on the Edge Cloud, in intra- and inter-data center networks. The Edge Cloud needs a network infrastructure able to deliver low latency, deterministic data delivery in time, and dynamic reconfiguration between objects in data centers or across data centers, through a fronthaul network. For this reason, Bell Labs has recently proposed a novel datacenter architecture relying on forward-looking optical concepts, namely, burst optical slot switching, which has the potential to pave the way for novel applications that require strong end-to-end service (capacity, latency, jitter) guarantees. Bell Labs has already demonstrated several main components of the novel architecture, but not all of them.
We are growing our team to further develop the project and are looking for new talents.
As a future member of the team you will have to carry one of the following tasks:
- 1) Real-time control plane: implement and validate on a real-time FPGA-based embedded system: scheduling policies and other performance-related mechanisms to decrease network latency;
- 2) Application level: set up applications with parallelized processing to emulate a real load for synchronous data centers. Adapt existing protocols to the specifics of our prototype. Compare performance between legacy data centers and our prototype.
Internship on optical satellite communications
Nokia Bell Labs
Background:
Several billion people have no Internet access today and drone or satellite communication could be a game changer for them; for instance, Google and FaceBook (among others) are investigating low altitude drone or balloon-based Internet relays, but coverage area is limited (metro, region). Also, satellite communication already exists for larger areas but uses radio frequencies and are limited to low data rates.
Nokia Bell Labs is investigating a third option: high speed optical communication between ground and satellites.
The data rate of such communication heavily depends on the properties of the channel between the ground station and the satellites. As an intern, you will be asked to work on implementing and validating digital signal processing algorithms on an FPGA platform that emulates an optical transmitter/receiver.

Preferred duration of the internship: 6 months.

Your role:
- Implement on an FPGA platform algorithms devised by other researchers in the team;
- Testing and validation;
- If time permits: propose novel algorithms.

Qualifications
- Working towards a degree (MS or Ph.D.) from an Electrical and Computer Engineering / Telecom / Physics school,
- Note: MS students may additionally be offered a Ph.D. fellowship (“CIFRE”) after the end of the internship
- Embedded systems (FPGA/VHDL),
- Basic digital communication knowledge (preferable),
- Matlab (preferable),
- Strong written and spoken communications skills and the ability to participate in robust discussions in English (mandatory).

- generate intellectual property and file patents;
- create and maintain strong collaborative associations with university-based researchers;
- contribute to the creative and innovative atmosphere at the Huawei Paris Research Centre;
- publish in top journals and conferences.

Qualifications:
- PhD degree in optical communications and DSP.
- Industrial experience highly desired.
- Strong background in DSP algorithms, digital communications and fiber transmission theory.
- Proven research track record with publications in high-impact optical journals and conferences.
- Excellent programming skills; expert in Python (preferred) and/or MATLAB, C/C++ is a plus.
- Laboratory experience is desired.
- English language spoken/written fluency and good communication skills.
- Ability to conduct independent research while also contributing to team-oriented projects.

Optimization of algorithms for free-space communication through the atmosphere
Master/ Internship Communications payload design for GEO VHTS: on-board optical feeder-to-RF user-link interface
DLR-German Aerospace Center
The optical communication group of DLR’s Institute of Communications and Navigation develops experimental laser communication systems for optical data links between airborne carriers such as airplanes or satellites and optical ground stations as well as demonstrator platforms for testbed system verifications. The system development covers several disciplines such as optics, mechanics, electronics and programming.

The successful applicant will support our team in the development of optical, photonic and communications systems for very-high-throughput satellite communications applications. Foremost, she/he will perform theoretical analysis and simulation of various techniques to realise analogue and digital signal transmission. Electrical and optical signal distortion analysis would conclude the theoretical analytical part, which shall be followed by experimental work on the laboratory prototype, where the relevant system parametres can be verified. Successful laboratory tests would then qualify the setup to be tested by the student with the team in an outdoor testbed.
