Postdoc Position at SINTEF DIGITAL in Software Security in Agile
SINTEF
We are looking for postdocs in the area
Of software security and agile development. We are open to discuss proposals of research in the area as long as it is empirically based research in the area. We seek for a postdoctoral researcher. We offer competitive salary and our projects run in collaboration with industry partners.
Doctoral Candidate (PhD Student) in Software Engineering (Assessing and Improving the PayPal DevOps practice)
SnT, University of Luxembourg
A full time PhD student is intended to work on the software testing project with PayPal. The subject of the thesis will be “Assessing and Improving the PayPal DevOps practice”, which involves the development of effective techniques that can reliably measure and maintain the quality of testing during the continuous process of software development. The goal of the project is to take advantage of the internal PayPal test architecture and perform continuous testing in effective (increase fault detection ability) and efficient way (fast with limited resources). The key attributes to be investigated regard the definition of appropriate test methods effectively assessed wrt. scope and applicability on the PayPal infrastructure and testing practice. The successful PhD candidate will extensively explore and develop software engineering techniques that include the feasibility, practicality and success evaluation of prototype implementations.

To enable a smooth collaboration between the SnT and Paypal testing infrastructure teams, the project requires the PhD candidate to be partly collocated in University of Luxembourg, Paypal-Luxembourg and Paypal-San Jose.

PhD candidate in the security of the Interner-of-Things
TU Delft
The insecurity of Internet-connected Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices poses a major security risk to critical Internet infrastructure. These IoT devices are often inadequately protected leading to substantial damage.  Currently, the IoT has enabled devices that previously lacked communication capabilities to be controlled and openly accessible through the Internet. The great bulk of these devices do not only lack of adequate security controls but also cannot be updated. Until vendors start manufacturing IoT devices with security in mind, it is important for network operators to have tools available to detect intrusion attempts and infected devices before they participate in a DDoS attack or other malicious activity. In addition to the technical aspects, there are also economic forces at play which are incentivizing profit motivated attackers to infect large numbers of IoT devices and rent out the resulting botnets for DDoS attacks. Understanding the economics behind IoT botnets and structure of intermediaries they depend on (i.e. anti-DDoS services, customer support, hosting, and payment processors) might illuminate bottlenecks in the operation that lead to effective non-technical or hybrid approaches for mitigating profit-fueled IoT-based DDoS services.

During this thesis, the PhD student will partner with the Dutch registry and New York University to design, build, and evaluate practical techniques and tools for mitigating the threat from IoT powered DDoS attacks.

PhD candidate in network security
TU Delft
Cyber risk management by firms is typically driven by evaluating inputs. CEOs and other decision makers use frameworks that compare the set of security controls deployed by their organization to a predefined normative framework (e.g., NIST, COBIT, SANS CIS Critical Security Controls). Very little cyber risk management is outcome-based – that is, based on the relationship between security investment and the resulting risk of a breach. Consequently, firms cannot answer basic questions, such as how much security is gained from investing in certain controls? Or, what controls are actually effective in reducing risk?

During this project, the PhD candidate will contributite towards moving us closer to an outcome-based cyber risk management by studying the causal links between controls, security level and incidents.
