Animal Caretaker-Carnivores
Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden
The Oklahoma City Zoo & Botanical Garden is seeking an enthusiastic and passionate individual to join the Carnivore Care Team in the role of Animal Caretaker as we continue to expand upon completion of Expedition Africa! Consisting of more than 35 species and over 200 individuals, the carnivore team is a dynamic and progressive program with a strong focus on behavioral husbandry, animal wellbeing and several breeding programs.

The Animal Caretaker-Carnivores position is responsible for maintaining the welfare of the Zoo’s assigned animal collection and its environment through daily husbandry, operant conditioning training and enrichment. Carnivore team members enhance guest experiences through daily interactions and frequent behind-the-scenes tours. Under the direct supervision of the Curator of Carnivores, this position performs a variety of skilled/semi-skilled work required for the care and safety of animals, staff and the public. The ideal candidate will have experience in the assigned taxa which may include native Oklahoma species, small and large felids, canids and bears. In addition, the qualified candidate will be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels, possess excellent communication and organizational skills and function effectively in a fast-paced, team environment.

Experience Required: One (1) year of paid experience working in an Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) accredited facility with relevant taxa OR, an equivalent combination of education and experience, including qualifying unpaid AZA internships, to successfully perform the essential duties. Minimum Education Requirements: High school diploma or G.E.D.

Carnivore keeper
Wilderness Wildlife Center
The Wilderness Wildlife Center is looking for a positive and experienced keeper to join the carnivore team to care for a diverse collection of carnivores including big cats, bears, wolves and small carnivores.

The Wilderness Wildlife Center is a new AZA certified related facility located 20 minutes west of Pittsburgh. We have helped rescue many orphaned native wildlife and are expanding to help with AZA SSP and breeding programs. We are closed to the public but do occasionally give small tours.

Responsibilities include:
Cleaning and maintaining habitats, indoor holdings, yards and service areas assigned.
Continual monitoring of habitats and service areas with attention to detail.
Exemplary animal care and providing assistance in veterinary management
Operant conditioning of collection for husbandry behaviors and providing enrichment
Animal observation and monitoring for behavioral and medical needs
Maintaining records, including entering data into ZIMS
Contributes to open team discussions and sharing ideas in positive and professional manner
Public Speaking and tours
Maintains good work habits and adheres to all policies and procedures
Assists with projects or daily duties in other animal care areas
Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, animal science or a related field
Previous animal care experience with large carnivores such as big cats, bears, canids, etc.
Introductions of larger carnivores preferred
Experience with operant conditioning and enrichment techniques preferred
Must have the ability to follow safety protocols, demonstrate focus, follow written and verbal instructions, effectively promote organization, manage stress to perform the job effectively, remember details, manage time effectively, apply critical thinking techniques, analyze and solve problems.
Demonstrate computer proficiency (experience with ZIMS a plus)

Salary is commensurate with experience with a base salary of $40,000 annual plus benefits.

To manage day-to-day operations of the Small Mammal/Kids Kingdom area of the animal care department under the direct supervision of the Small Mammal Supervisor. Supervise personnel and assure adherence to established zoo protocols and practices. Focus on communication within and outside the department.
