Ph. D position
Polytechnique Montréal Location: The project will take place at Polytechnique Montréal and will be supervised by Professor Dany Lauzon, in close collaboration with engineers and scientists from Englobe.... Project Description: Geotechnical modeling often involves complex manual steps, such as interpreting drillings and creating structural models. Currently, this non-automated approach poses significant challenges in terms of time and complexity when updating models with new data or adjusting to geological interpretations. To address these issues, the adaptation of the Python module called ArchPy is envisaged to meet these specific needs. ArchPy facilitates the automatic generation of geological models and parameters in a hierarchical manner, thus simplifying a process that is often tedious and fragmented. This automation provides remarkable flexibility for modeling using geostatistical methods, enabling efficient generation of stochastic models and precise quantification of uncertainty. However, it is imperative to adapt the ArchPy module to the specific requirements of geotechnics. This involves establishing an adequate database for geotechnical modeling, defining modeling parameters, determining empirical modeling laws, as well as interpreting uncertainty analyses to better guide professionals in the field.

PhD position
Ctt groupe Rapid Crack Propagation (RCP) of geomembranes (GMBs) is a field failure mechanism observed in lining containment applications (mining facilities), especially in the Arctic and ... cold regions. RCP observed in GMBs sheets and on the edge of seams (welds connecting GMB sheets to form a liner) can lead to the loss of the hydraulic barrier function of the GMB liner and the contamination of surrounding soils and groundwater. While RCP has been observed in many sites across the globe, the combination of site conditions and material properties that catalyze the RCP in GMB liners is unknown. The primary objectives of the PhD research are to gain novel insights into RCP of GMBs and investigate failure mechanisms in mining applications in Arctic areas and cold regions (Theme 1). A laboratory simulation is also required to assign potential risks and resistance thresholds based on site conditions including temperature, thermal gradient, and seamstress concentrations (Theme 2). Finally, A lab-based simulation of the failure mechanism will enable adapting new GMB formulations that will be more resistant to RCP, as well as make recommendations on how to weld together GMB sheets, to reduce the risk of RCP failure in GMB installations in cold regions to develop a well defined technical specifications and requirements (Theme 3) Affiliation: The PhD student will be affiliated to Queen’s University in Ontario in Canada and will be based in Montreal to work at CTT Groupe.He/she will have the chance to work with an outstanding team of Researchers in the field of Geoenvironmental engineering and industry/field experts to provide novel insights into the conditions and properties that trigger RCP in exposed GMB sheets and their welds will be provided. The partnership includes a world leading GMB manufacturer (Solmax International), an academic organization (Queen’s University), a testing and research laboratory (CTT groupe)
