We are seeking highly motivated perspective students for a 3 years PhD PROGRAMME IN BIODIVERSITY, AGRICULTURE, AND ENVIRONMENT on a specific doctorate project funded by the NextGenerationEU (D.M. n. 351 – PNRR doctorates) on the theme:
"Climate-smart forest management in a protected Mediterranean landscape. Simulation of the effects of climate change and adaptive forest management on the capacity of forest ecosystems to absorb carbon and on the fragmentation and quality of semi-natural habitats".
The project aims to identify climate-smart forest management specific to Mediterranean landscapes. A forest landscape modelling approach (e.g. LANDIS-II) will guide the selection of the most appropriate CFS measures. Alternative management scenarios will be defined taking into account the specific priorities for the landscape being studied, focusing on the conservation of biodiversity, habitats of community interest and carbon sinks.

Mandatory 9 months period at the Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
Further collaborations are envisaged with Prof. Giorgio Vacchiano and other colleagues form other European research institutions.

The selection will be based on the evaluation of titles, written test and oral test, with foreign language knowledge checking (English), according to art. 6 letter A of the call.

Key Responsibilities

Skills and experience required for the role
Have a relevant PhD or Masters, ideally with several years of experience, in industry/research
Have a strong background in research and analytical skills, and excellent GIS and data analysis skills including in R, QGIS and ARCGIS
Knowledge and experience of environmental monitoring techniques
Preferably, experience with using big data approaches for environmental monitoring
Be comfortable speaking to high-level clients and external stakeholders
Outstanding project management and organizational skills

The Chair of Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems (PLUS) at ETH Zürich is offering a research assistant position in spatial analyses and social-ecological systems modeling for mapping ecosystem services, soundscapes and ecological infrastructure.
The position is 80 – 100 % for one year, after which the position can potentially be extended or continued in the form of a PhD.

The applicant (75 (PhD) 100% (postdoc), staring in September 2022 or by agreement) will be responsible for independently developing and testing models for the spatial simulation of ecosystem services that reflect the uptake of agri-environmental measures at the landscape scale. Emphasis is placed on the practical development and validation of the models. The applicant will integrate the models into a data-based decision support system, allowing farmers to evaluate ex ante whether agri-environmental measures are effective and efficient at the respective locations. Interest in working with farms is required for optimal design of the decision support system for subsequent farm advisory services. The position requires a professional qualification in the form of a university degree in landscape ecology, (agro-)ecological modeling, geoinformatics or comparable fields of study. Knowledge and experience in spatial modeling, geospatial data processing, and agroecology is desirable.

Professor of landscape architecture, urban design and transformation

The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, invites applications for a professor of landscape architecture, urban design and transformation.
The position aims at further developing and strengthening the crossfield of landscape architecture, urban design and the emerging field of transformation with a focus on strategic design processes related to the planning and transformation of built environments and landscapes. We are looking for research and educational capacities that respond to current situated/place-based, strategic and collaborative design practices focusing on both short-term and long-term sustainable urban and rural transformation (in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals). The position is placed within the research group for landscape architecture and urbanism that approaches transformation from a humanities and design-centered perspective.
As an applicant, you must have a design education and an academic standing within landscape architecture/architecture/urban design. You must have an international research profile and strong teaching experiences within the crossfield of the disciplines mentioned above focusing on sustainable urban and rural design and transformation. Experience with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and teaching is a critical asset – also in regard to design studio teaching and supervision of transformation projects within a landscape architecture and urban design educational context and in seeking societal collaboration and societal impact.
