OxMLSys Lab
============

The Oxford Machine Learning Systems (OxMLSys) lab is part of the Cyber-Physical Systems theme and Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford. We investigate a variety of open problems that sit at the intersection of machine learning and various forms of computational systems (viz. embedded, cloud, mobile). The scientific contributions of our lab often take one of two forms. First, the development of novel theoretically principled machine learning methodologies – especially those with applications to the modeling of data such as image, audio, spatial and inertial information. Second, the design and architecture of system algorithms and software that treat machine learning computation as a first-class citizen – this often results in transformative increases in training and inference efficiency. Our unifying aim is to invent the next-generation of device- and cloud-based systems able to perceive, reason and react to complex real-world environments and users with high levels of precision and efficiency. We seek to achieve this impact through holistic full-stack approaches that encourage lab members with skills in algorithms, hardware, statistics, mathematics and software to work closely together to solve critical challenges in this area.

ML Researchers and Fellows
Intuition Machines, Inc.
Interested in working on hard problems at scale?
Intuition Machines, Inc. builds ML products and services used by some of the largest companies in the world. Come learn from and collaborate with our veteran team of machine learning and distributed systems experts, hailing from Stanford, MIT, Apple, and Cloudera. We are also in a unique position to be able to leverage huge datasets for semi-supervised learning.

We are now opening applications for our 2019 Fellows program. You have the option of working from our San Francisco or Helsinki offices, or remotely: we have a large distributed workforce supplementing the teams in our offices, and are comfortable with remote collaboration.

As a discipline still finding its theoretical footing, doing ML at scale tends to uncover unique problems and occasionally spark unique insights. Our work is geared towards applying some of our more theoretical ideas, as we believe this is one of the best ways to push forward the field.

We conduct original research in areas like unsupervised and active learning, motivated by the unique problems and datasets we have access to as one of the larger users of cloud resources for ML. You will have the opportunity to publish with our scientists if your work yields results, and we have a strong commitment to open source code and (when possible) datasets.

Research interests:
We are very interested in taking a more geometric view of neural network processes. A background in algebraic geometry, representation theory, or statistical physics will be helpful.

Separately, we are investigating future directions for active and online learning, with the unique capacity to rapidly test and apply at scale ideas in this area.

Finally, we are pursuing some interesting directions in multi-task or joint representation learning for anomaly detection, and in time series analysis.

Please contact Tom Bishop tom@intuitionmachines for more details, or find us at the conference!

Lead/ Computer Vision Scientist
Orbital Insight
Our mission is to understand the Earth, including all of the economic and social trends impacting us. To do that we are building the best computer vision team in the world for large scale automated analysis of satellite and aerial imagery.

To support this work we need creative and expert engineers who are not afraid of taking on computer vision problems that have never been tried before. They must be familiar with a broad range of techniques and able to research and utilize the best methods to complete the task. We also need them to never stop improving both the coverage and accuracy of the objects and kinds of land use that we can recognize.

The world is a very big place. With a single photograph of Earth, like the famous “Blue Marble” from Apollo 17, the entire world can fit on a computer screen. However, with this image you would not be able to see much detail. To see the Earth and all of its rich features, you would need a lot more images. In fact it would take over 500 million images just to observe the land area of Earth at 1 meter pixel resolution.

In order to see detail and work at scale, we use computer vision and machine learning. Using convolutional neural networks, we have counted over 3 billion cars across global roads and parking lots, analyzing commercial patterns as well as city growth and development. Our global energy product uses computer vision to map floating roof oil tanks and measure the global volumes of crude oil. With this product, we were able to show that China has 200 million barrels of oil storage capacity that was unknown even to the trading community. Other projects include tracking rates of deforestation, measuring poverty levels around the globe, monitoring construction rates of new roads and buildings, and predicting crop yields. This is still the beginning of our mission to understand the Earth.

Research Scientist - US
Salesforce Research Lab
Research scientists discover new research problems, develop novel models, design careful experiments and generally advance the state of the art in AI. At Salesforce, the research team is committed to collaboration with the wider research community; while research scientists have the opportunity to work directly on advancing technologies that customers use as part of the Einstein Platform, they may also focus exclusively on publications. We believe that making substantive progress on hard applications can drive and sharpen the research questions we study, and, in turn, scientific breakthroughs can spawn entirely new applications. With this in mind, the team maintains a portfolio of projects, some with an immediate path to production, others that may not find an application for several years. Research scientists have the freedom to set their own research agenda and move between pure and applied research.

Ideal candidates have a strong background in one or more of the following fields: deep learning, machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, or reinforcement learning. Additionally, applicants should have in-depth experience with one or more of text categorization, text summarization, information extraction, question answering, dialogue learning, machine translation, language and vision, image classification, image segmentation, or object detection.

Candidates should have a strong publication record in top-tier conferences or journals (e.g. NIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, CVPR, KDD, PAMI, JMLR, TACL, IJCV).

In addition to their own research agenda, senior research scientists will have the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities leading project teams, mentoring interns, and advising junior research scientists.

Responsibilities and Requirements can be found at the link above.
