Assistant/Associate Professor in Interiors

Drexel University’s Department of Architecture, Design & Urbanism invites applications for a 9-month tenure track position teaching in the core curriculum of the Interiors Program beginning September 1, 2023.

Required Qualifications:
This position calls for candidates who have previous teaching experience, administrative potential, and can demonstrate collaborative, creative work in their area(s) of expertise.
• Minimum of a professional degree in interior design/interior architecture (BS, BA or BFA in Interior Design/interior architecture) with sustained professional experience. If candidate has more than one degree, at least one degree must be in Interior Design/Interior Architecture
• Minimum of 2 years of professional practice in interior design/interior architecture.
· Minimum of 3 years of college level teaching experience
· Able to teach diverse communities employing inclusive pedagogy and diverse viewpoints.

Preferred Qualifications:
· Evidence-based approaches to design, such as the impact of design on diverse and minoritized communities.
· Research, Experience, Expertise in one or several of the following areas:
· Emerging technologies (in areas such as representation, fabrication, AI, AR, VR)
· Human-centered design
· Environmental wellness
· Participatory and community-based design
· Design equity and social justice
• Working knowledge and/or certification in LEED, WELL, Fitwel, or other design standards.

Assistant Professor (Tenurable)

The successful candidate will teach various courses in the Bachelor of Interior Design, with an initial focus on Systems (construction and codes) and Studio. Additional courses may include Tools (graphic communications and technology) and Design & Precedent (design theory and techniques).

The successful applicant will be an Interior Design practitioner and will have:
- A minimum of a Master’s degree in Interior Design (or related area)
- A minimum of 5 years experience in professional interior design practice (or a related field)
- Professional knowledge of, and experience with, interior building systems such as and not limited to building construction, construction documentation, lighting, acoustics, material science, building codes, and sustainable design
- Experience and familiarity across multiple areas of practice, including a broad range of projects with a variety of scales and types, and the ability to apply design knowledge to classroom and studio environments
- Undergraduate teaching experience in both studio and lecture-based courses
- A demonstrated passion for design and keen interest in engaging with students, colleagues and practitioners
- NCIDQ certification or the ability to achieve it within the first year of employment
- Currency and competency in relevant design software, such as AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, REVIT, and SketchUp

In addition, any of the following would be definite assets:
- Certification in LEED AP and/or WELL Building Standards
- Experience in curriculum development, pedagogy and assessment (including creating lectures, learnings activities and assignments)
- Demonstrated commitment to enhancing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI)
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with non-Western design traditions, Indigenous ways of understanding space and land, and/or design for social

Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Human Sciences and Design will support Dr. Debra Harris’ research program by contributing to research planning, execution of research studies, proposal development and writing manuscripts for publication; and managing the lab team. In addition, the postdoc will have dedicated time to work on their research with mentoring support and gain teaching experience.

Anticipated start date is July 1, 2023. Funding for this appointment ends on May 31, 2024. The appointment may continue if external funding is acquired.

Dr. Harris’ research is interdisciplinary, interventional, and translational, focusing on indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and the impact on human health and occupant experience in the built environment. The current focus of scholarship activity is the development of a software product that assists architects and designers with integrating evidence-based design strategies in active projects focused on health & wellness, and sustainability. Another area of research focuses on the implication of material interaction with chemical and biological contaminants known to cause injury or illness. Research inquiry evaluates how materials contribute to transmission in the indoor environment.
