Structural Analysis Technical Specialist
Cummins
Due to a recent internal move, Cummins Emission Solutions has an opening for a structural analyst skilled in structural dynamics, including test/analysis correlation, representation of mild nonlinearities, and substructuring/boundary impedance representation. Our division, which engineers and manufactures exhaust “aftertreatment systems” converting particulate and chemical pollutants to acceptable levels and attenuating acoustic noise, has about 30 structural analysts in the US, China, Germany and India. Our systems ride on trucks, construction/mining/logging equipment, special-purpose vehicles like snow groomers and pavement rollers, locomotives, and power generators. The sheet metal weldments see a mix of random vibration, ordered vibration from powertrains, and mechanical shocks – we design for acceptable fatigue life at a competitive cost.

The Stoughton, Wisconsin team (just south of Madison), is a bit over eleven years old and combines application characterization/profile definition, physical testing (group has a load frame, multiple data acquisition systems, a six-axis servohydraulic MAST system, and 26000 pound electrodynamic shaker), and simulation (our primary simulation tools are ANSYS, fe-safe, nCode DesignLife and FEMtools).

If interested, please check the link below for the position description and to apply.

NOMAD Research Institute - Graduate and Undergraduate Summer Intern
Sandia National Laboratories
*The 2021 program will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 health crisis.

The Nonlinear Mechanics and Dynamics (NOMAD) Research Institute is a seven-week long program held at the University of New Mexico (UNM) that brings together researchers from around the world to work on challenging research problems in engineering sciences. The Component Science and Mechanics Department is seeking motivated and productive student interns to contribute to a number of the summer research projects. The internship will provide you with opportunities to work in diverse research teams, to participate in a research project that will be published as a conference paper, and to engage/network with professionals working within their research fields.

Summer projects for NOMAD 2021 include:

Nonlinear characterization of a joint exhibiting a reduction in damping at high energy

Empirical models of puncture energy for metals

Mapping from low fidelity to high fidelity analysis for failure quantities of interest

Modeling rate dependent interface separation with cohesive zone models and bulk viscoelasticity

Investigating electrical connection chatter induced by structural dynamics

Nonlinear transient response of electromechanical assemblies

NASA Engineering and Safety Center - Loads and Dynamics Internship
NASA
Greetings Loads and Dynamics Community:

The NESC Loads and Dynamics (L&D) Technical Discipline Team (TDT) is seeking a summer 2021 intern to support on-going assessments, knowledge capture, and organize discipline enhancement activities. This is a great opportunity for a student to learn more about the L&D discipline and will contribute towards the implementation of the FY21 TDT focus statement: LOADS – Leading Outstanding Aerospace Loads & Dynamics Solutions! More information on NASA’s continuing efforts to advance the field of structural dynamics can be found in section TX12.5 on page 155 of the NASA technology taxonomy plan. Applicants should be an undergraduate or graduate student focusing on a STEM related field.

Interested applicants can apply for this internship along with other opportunities at: https://nasa.force.com/s/login/
and apply for the solicitation titled: NESC Loads and Dynamics Technical Discipline Team Apprentice - 20072

More information about the NASA internships program can be found at https://intern.nasa.gov/

The remote internship will be hosted by Langley Research Center. All applicants should submit their application for this solicitation by February 28th for consideration. Thank you.
