The Health Technology Lab (www.northeastern.edu/healthtech/) at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, is looking to hire one postdoctoral research fellow with strong interest and competency in behavioral interventions using technology (e.g. video games, apps, etc.), with a special emphasis on physical activity and child obesity intervention.

The Lab provides an intellectually vibrant scientific environment for researchers and scientists who study the persuasive mechanisms of media and communication technologies and their health, behavioral and psychological applications. We are currently funded by the National Institutes of Health to conduct a 5-year study on the use of active video games to encourage children to increase their physical activity levels.

The primary objective of the position is to conduct and coordinate research in physical activity intervention using exercise science methods such as accelerometry, and body composition measurement, and blood specimen processing. The fellow will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers (including communication and behavioral scientists, medical doctors, kinesiologists, psychologists, computer scientists, and biostatisticians) and be involved in all aspects of the research process. Opportunities include having access to data sets for publications, developing and writing research grant proposals, participation in providing academic mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students and research staff, dissemination of research findings at professional conferences, and career development resources through Northeastern University and the Greater Boston area. PhD studentship: The influence of non-parental childcare during early childhood for long term health and health behaviours
Loughborough University
Early childhood (0-5 years of age) is a critical period for the healthy development of children, namely because physical and mental health problems that start at this age can track throughout life, and key health-related behaviours (e.g., physical activity/diet) are established at this stage in life. Some studies have linked broad measures of non-parental childcare (e.g., nurseries and childminders) to increased risk of obesity, mental health difficulties, and unhealthy activity and dietary habits. However, the evidence is limited, there is a general lack of detail in the way childcare has been looked at, and we know nothing about how different patterns of childcare during early childhood influence long-term health and related behaviours.

This PhD research will use data from existing British cohort studies to characterise patterns of non-parental childcare use in early childhood, investigate how these patterns are related to long term health and/or health behaviours, and how these relationships and patterns of childcare use vary between groups of society (e.g., according to ethnicity and socioeconomic position). Within this remit, and with the guidance of the supervisors, the PhD student will have the opportunity to define their own research questions and choose the appropriate cohort(s) to address these.

Applicants are requested to submit their CV and a one-page (A4-size) proposal briefly outlining the gap in the literature and research questions they would like to address during their studentship.

PhD studentship (funded) maternal obesity
Newcastle University
See advert for full description, eligibility criteria and details on application process. Funded for 3 years starting October 2019.

This PhD will use risk prediction and health economic modelling methodologies to investigate whether targeting interventions using measures of asilosity can be a cost-effective approach for improving pregnancy outcomes for women and their babies.

BMI in early pregnancy is used in guidelines and clinical practice as a measure to identify which women are at increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. BMI is well established as being an inaccurate measure to predict individual risk. This PhD studentship will be aligned to an NIHR Fellowship research programme which is exploring the predictive value of alternative adiposity measures to BMI (e.g. visceral fat thickness, waist circumference) in identifying which women are at increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The PhD research will build on this risk prediction research to explore whether targeting weight management interventions based on adiposity-related risk factors is a an efficient approach to improving the pregnancy and longer term outcomes for women and their babies.

Supervised by Dr Nicola Heslehurst (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/ihs/staff/profile/nicolaheslehurst), Senior Lecturer in Maternal Nutrition, Professor Luke Vale (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/cohr/staff/profile/lukevale), Professor of Health Economics, and Dr Fay Smith, Research Associate.

Postdoc in Childhood Obesity Research at Stanford University
Stanford University
Postdoctoral fellowships available in childhood obesity prevention and treatment research with the Stanford Solutions Science Lab (Professor Thomas Robinson).
PhD studentship on intervention to fractionate long periods of sedentary time.
University of Limerick
This fully-funded PhD studentship will provide full fees and stipend for a 4 year project. The research will interrogate activity databases to determine the most effective design for a sedentary fractionation intervention in older adults, employing bouts of light activity to break up long sedentary periods. The design will then be refined through lab based pilot work, and a field based feasibility study will be undertaken to assess the potential of the intervention. The project will enable the student to work as part of a successful research group and to gain experience of state of the art data processing methods and effective intervention design. Anyone interested should contact Professor Alan Donnelly either at ISBNPA or via email.
