Participatory Resource Management Fellowship
Sierra Institute for Community and Environment
The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment is looking to fill
two participatory resource management fellowships beginning Fall 2018 to advance a community-based approach to resource management in California’s Upper Feather River watershed. One fellow will be responsible for leading the implementation of a restoration plan based on a basin-wide fisheries assessment conducted in the Upper Feather River watershed, including conducting eDNA sampling, fish passage surveys, and coordinating a technical advisory committee focused on whirling disease mitigation strategies. The second fellow will be responsible for completing biological surveys and scientific writing in support of environmental analysis for a collaborative forest restoration project in the Upper Feather River watershed.

As part of our Sierra Fellows program, both fellowships provide the opportunity for professional development through mentorships, and hands-on education and experience working with rural communities. These year-long fellowships represent a unique opportunity for recent bachelor or advanced degree graduates to expand their skillsets while implementing resource management projects in ways that are responsive to community stakeholders.

Post Doc (ABD) social scientist
USGS
The Social and Economic Analysis Branch of the United States Geological Survey is excited to announce an opportunity for a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Fort Collins Science Center, Colorado. We seek a researcher with expertise in conducting mixed methods social science research to work with the USGS in collaboration with the BLM.

The work is part of a larger multi-partner interdisciplinary research effort. The intention of this project is to identify actions that can be taken now or in the future to manage impacts of energy exploration and development on human communities on the Colorado Plateau. The incumbent will work with the research Team to: 1) investigate the potential impacts to targeted social systems resulting from management of public lands for outdoor recreation and tourism activities simultaneously with energy development; 2) identify locations on the landscape that are valued by public land users; 3) illustrate the potential conflicts among user groups resulting from multiple land uses; and 4) identify potential management alternatives to maximize the benefits received from multiple land uses. A mixed qualitative and quantitative method approach will be used; specifically, Public Participatory Mapping method will be used. PPGIS efforts use GIS tools and mapping interfaces to include local communities, user groups, and other interested stakeholders in planning processes.

The preferred candidate will have experience in: 1) GIS; 2) qualitative data collection; 3) internet-based survey design and administration; 4) quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques; and 5) technical writing skills.

Candidates who are ABD or have graduated in the past 12 months will be considered. Salary is competitive with similar jobs in the social sciences at comparable education levels. Please send an email letter of interest directly to Dr. Rudy Schuster (schusterr@usgs.gov).
Two tenure track faculty appointments
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has two tenure track faculty appointments that will begin recruitment in the coming months although these positions haven’t been officially posted. They will be Assistant Professor level positions with the Interdisciplinary & Global Studies Division, with specific focus on teaching and advising in the Global Projects Program. A Ph.D. is required with foreign research experience and interests preferred. Candidates from Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science and similar fields would be relevant. The job will entail teaching a course that prepares undergrads to do largely applied social science oriented research projects at sites around the world, including the US. The faculty members would also go with the students to these locations as advisors for 7-8 week periods of time after the students complete the preparation course. The students all do projects as members of 3-4 person teams with the goal of helping our dominantly science and engineering focused students to understand the importance of the relationship between Society and science and technology. I would be happy to meet with any interested candidates between today (6/20) and tomorrow (6/21) at about 4:00 pm. My email address is cpeet@wpi.edu. If you don’t have the time to meet with me, you can send me your CV, and I can pass it along to the appropriate people back on campus. Since our program is very unique, however, either talking to me, or at least going to the university website to explore more about our program and the types of faculty who are participating in our project-based learning focused approach and what kinds of projects and places we take students to would be a good idea.
