The US Forest Service Wood Identification & Screening Center (WISC) at Oregon State University invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships in stable isotope and botanical provenance testing for a two-year position in Corvallis, OR. A successful candidate will join WISC, a wood identification forensic service provider and research laboratory with specialization in mass spectrometry. The main goal of WISC is to support enforcement of the U.S. Lacey Act and Endangered Species Act with respect to the timber trade. Illegal logging is the third largest transnational crime.
Applications from recent Ph.D.s (including those to be awarded at the end of Spring or Summer 2021) in the fields of stable isotope geochemistry and geospatial mapping are encouraged to apply.
Duties:
-Work with WISC on wood identification technologies for determining wood origin
-Collaborate with and receive training from global WISC partners who have expertise in Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis for timber origin identification
-Lead projects that apply stable isotope ratio analysis (SIRA) for timber origin identification
Investigate combinational methods of wood identification to improve origin authentication of wood products
Minimum Qualifications:
-PhD with thesis research in the areas of SIRA and/or spatial mapping
-Experience conducting stable isotope ratio analyses and interpreting results
-Experience planning, designing, executing, and coordinating research
-Publication record
-Strong communication skills that allow for working effectively as a member of a team and with global partners
-Passage of a criminal history check. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions

European Wilderness Communication Assistant (m/w/d)

Europe has lost most of its natural landscapes. Less than one percent of Europe’s forests are classified as primary forests. Old- growth forests still make a larger but still dramatically small part of the forest cover in Europe. This position is part of a wider international initiative which aims to advance the protection of the world’s remaining temperate and boreal primary forests through improving the information base, to identify emerging threats, develop policy options, and investigate on-ground implementation issues through case studies. The initiative is led by the Griffith University, Australia (lead partner) and formed by research and conservation institutions from e.g. Russia and the US. Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) and the Wild Europe Initative lead on the implementation of activities in Europe. A part of this project is the establishment and maintenance of a website with information about the distribution of primary and old- growth forests in Europe and their value for conserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change.
This project activity will be implemented in close collaboration with the Natural Forest Academy, Germany and therefore the position is based at their office in Lübeck. The position is initially for a fixed- term of one year with the possibility of extension contingent on the approval of third-party funding.

Youth Leader Chair - World Urban Parks

The Young Leader Chair, will work closely with the Chair and Deputy Chair and the CEO. They will be a World Urban Parks Board member and a member of the World Urban Parks Board Executive. They will be an alternate Chair with the Deputy -Chair.
There are a minimum of three Board meetings per year (2 hours per meeting) and a minimum of six Board Executive meetings (1 hour per meeting) and duties related to conferences and events and international committees (as required).
This role will support the Board Chair and has the following responsibilities: • Taking a leading role in achieving WUP’s vision and mission. • Managing Board meetings to ensure that they function effectively, interact with management optimally and fulfill all their duties. • Optimise the relationship between the Board and management. Reflect any concerns management has in regard to role of Board and any concerns of the Board to the CEO. • Ensure that Chair succession is planned as part of good governance. • Annually ensure that the Board reviews governance that relates to its own structure, role and relationship to management. • With the CEO, act as WUP spokesperson to the media, government and other organisations. There are a range of other requirements defined in Board Governance Policy (GOV04 -2018 -4) and draft Succession Plan.
