Research Technician III

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Research Technician III to support Laboratory Animal Services in maintaining and monitoring animal husbandry, health, production, post-operative care and the physical surroundings within various animal care environments. This position is a Temporary 4-month position with the possibility of extension. The shift will be Monday through Friday and requires some holiday work.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: monitoring and recording daily animal health and production; cage changing; tissue collection; injections with accuracy; animal mating and maintaining breeding colonies according to team standards; handling and manipulation of various species within a controlled environment; processing equipment and supplies; maintaining barrier inventory levels; preparation of anesthesia in absence of supervisor; performing regular QA’s; annual review of SOP’s; assist with training of new staff members; assist with Transnetyx billing.

In addition to outstanding written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a team oriented environment; this position requires the physical capacity to frequently lift and move 100 pounds; weekend shift coverage and some holidays; and the ability to use scientific equipment and computers.

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent. The preferred candidate will have AALAS certification and/or experience in animal caretaking, time matings, and colony management.

Review relevant Standard Operating Procedures to ensure compliance with external guidelines and regulations governing animal care and use

Collaborate with the veterinary and investigative staff on research projects, primarily pre-clinical study conduct; operate laboratory equipment and software applications used for collecting clinical data; provide support and training on technical procedures for investigative staff; understand the active research activities; and provide minor surgical and anesthesia assistance as needed

Some travel between sites within the San Francisco Bay Area on a daily basis may be necessary
