Research Intern - Computational Social Science
Microsoft Research
Microsoft Research provides a dynamic environment with a network of world-class research labs led by globally recognized scientists and engineers. Our researchers and engineers pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines, to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.
The Microsoft Research Computational Social Science (CSS) group is widely recognized as a leading center of CSS research, lying at the intersection of computer science, statistics and the social sciences. Our approach is motivated by two longstanding difficulties for traditional social science: first, that simply gathering observational data on human activity is extremely difficult at scale and over time; and second, that running experiments to manipulate the conditions under which these measurements are made (e.g., randomly assigning large sets of interacting people to treatment and control groups) is even more challenging and often impossible.
In the first category, we exploit digital data that is generated by existing platforms (e.g., email, web browsers, search, social media) to generate novel insights into individual and collective human behavior. In the second category, we design novel “virtual lab” experiments that allow for larger scale, longer time horizons, and greater complexity and realism than is possible in physical labs.

We are strong believers in responsible AI: our goal is to apply AI to systems in a way that is minimally disruptive, synergistic with human solutions, and safe. Our team is inherently interdisciplinary, as is our mission. We engage in deep collaborations with world experts in machine learning, computational social science, economics, and FATE. In all of our work, a top priority is impact: we publish at the best academic conferences and journals, in systems and beyond; our work has also led to multiple tech transfers with product groups across the company, resulting in real business impact.

FHWA NRC Research Associateship Program - Use of Machine Learning to Move Towards Performance Specifications
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) is seeking a postdoctoral associate with an expertise in applying machine learning to asphalt materials. he use of machine learning offers potential to the asphalt pavement community. Additionally, FHWA offers a unique dataset to advance this important topic, including performance information from the Long-Term Pavement Performance database and the Asphalt Binder and Mixture Laboratory (ABML) at TFHRC.

FHWA NRC Research Associateship Program - Leveraging Big Data for Enhanced Pavement Management
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
Pavement management relies on different types of data. Inventory data describe the physical elements of a road system. Pavement construction history data describe the pavement structure and layer composition. Condition data describe the condition of elements that can be expected to change over time. Traffic and climate data describe the traffic and environmental loading the pavement is subjected over time. Cost data describe historical investments and serve as a data source for future cost estimates.

FHWA NRC Research Associateship Program - Highway Performance Big Data Applications
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has been collecting the annual Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) data and the monthly traffic volume counts data for a long time. More recently, the FHWA has been acquiring what is known as the National Performance Management Research Data Set (NPMRDS) from private businesses. The NPMRDS data are probe-based travel time dataset providing segment-level travel times in 5-minute increments for over 440,000 directional miles of roads designated as the National Highway System (NHS) for the entire nation. With unprecedented coverage and granularity, this rich dataset can be applied in transportation performance management, modeling, and planning. Linked with other data sources, the NPMRDS opens the door for a whole new spectrum of research and applications. One potential example is to integrate the NPMRDS data with the annul HPMS, the monthly traffic count data, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data and other safety or incidents datasets to decipher safety issues and offer potential insights on relationships and causations.

FHWA NRC Research Associateship Program - Development of Next Generation Model of the Highway Economic Requirements System (HERS)
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
FHWA’s Office of Transportation Policy Studies based in Washington, DC is seeking a talented Research Associate to support enhancements to the Highway Economic Requirements System (HERS). The HERS model provides national projections of highway condition and performance under alternative potential levels of investment over a 20-year horizon and yields estimates of the investment needs relative to alternative targets. The model is currently being re-coded from Fortran into Python, which will facilitate the incorporation of advanced optimization algorithms. The current algorithms are dated and myopically optimize the investment program a single period at a time without adequately considering investment timing across the time horizon. The investment program consists of improvement options to more than 100,000 sections of highway in the model database. The computation run time is very expensive because of the vast sample size, the existence of constraints on the total dollar amount of investment, the need to select among alternative potential improvements (i.e. resurface or reconstruct, add lanes, shoulder improvements) to a given highway section, along with inefficiency of the modeling codes.

FHWA NRC Research Associateship Program - Application of Artificial Intelligence for Highway Infrastructure Asset Management
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
Recently, there is a strong demand for the condition assessment of a large population of highway infrastructure with various advanced non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technologies and advanced processing techniques, which allow automated identification of hidden defects and damages. To date, the interpretation of NDE is generally carried out in a point-by-point manner, which treats each data point in isolation and ignores its spatial context. Also, NDE techniques have been employed to capture snapshots of condition, and thus all NDE data analysis and interpretation techniques focus exclusively on data collected at a single time-period. Over the last decade, several researchers have begun to deploy NDE over multiple time periods with the goal of not just capturing a snapshot of condition, but also tracking the deterioration rate and how the spatial patterns of deterioration evolve with time. This new approach to data collection essentially creates a time series of NDE data; however, current data analysis and interpretation approaches are only capable of dealing with NDE data as a snapshot.

FHWA NRC Research Associateship Program - Analyzing Big SHRP2 NDS Datasets for Better Intersection Safety
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
The second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) addresses some of the most pressing needs of the nation’s highway system. The safety component of SHRP2 represents the largest ever naturalistic driving study in the world to better understand the interactions among various factors involved in highway crashes--driver, vehicle, and infrastructure. As of February 2015, all SHRP2 safety area field data collection and archiving have ended, and now this rich dataset is available for researchers to explore and uncover the clues of how the interacting factors led to the various types of roadway events.
