This Internship is located in the Advanced Technology Applications Center (ATAC) of the Global Databases Division, Infrastructure & Platforms Sector. The Section is responsible for providing support in machine learning (ML) applications to other database sections, to other WIPO Divisions and other external entities. The Section has developed its own machine learning tools for WIPO and for other international organizations: automatic translation tool (WIPO Translate, http://patentscope.wipo.int/translate), image similarity for trademarks (https://branddb.wipo.int/). The section has also developed WIPO speech-to-text (voice recognition for conferences, available at webcast.wipo.int) for the needs of the over 150 meetings that WIPO hosts every year. ATAC wishes to continue exploring the applicability of Machine Learning to other intellectual property activities.
We are looking for an intern to contribute to further develop WIPO speech-to-text (S2T) and participate in the exploration of new applications.
The selected intern will contribute to improving our tool by helping gathering and filtering training data, exploring new machine learning methods, tuning training parameters, and evaluating results. The post is located at WIPO’s headquarters in Geneva.
The intern works under the supervision of the Machine Learning Researcher of the ATAC center.

The appointee will assist the Principal Investigator, Prof. Stuart McManus, on a project “Bringing Together China and the West: Using Big Data and Machine Learning to Demonstrate the Extent of Chinese Cultural Influence in Renaissance Europe”.
Applicants should have (i) Master of Science/MPhil preferably in Computer Science or other related STEM discipline plus relevant experience; candidates with a Bachelor of Science and significant relevant experience will also be considered (ii) proficiency in both written and spoken English and preferably Chinese; (iii) strong organizational, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills; (iv) a strong sense of responsibility, integrity and high self-motivation; and (v) the ability to work independently and attentively (vi) an interest in historical linguistics, history, East-West relations, etc.
The appointee will be responsible for (a) building a model for identifying text re-use across corpora in multiple natural languages using Python (b) working on problems related to machine translation for Classical Chinese and other languages; (d) testing the model and applying its insights to the question of the impact of Chinese literature in early modern Europe
Appointment will be made on contract basis for 10 months commencing as soon as possible, but no later than January 1, 2024.
