Under the direction of the Natural Resources Coordinator, individual will identify trees infected with oak wilt, Dutch elm disease and Emerald ash borer (EAB) on public and private property within the City of Apple Valley. The tree inspector will provide preventive treatment recommendations and follow up inspections to assure compliance with diseased tree ordinance. Work will involve frequent communication with the public during field inspections, phone conversations, and email. Job duties may also include: tree inventory, tree and pest identification, planting and watering. This position will require spending a significant amount of time outdoors.
• Inspect the City of Apple Valley via City vehicle and foot travel for oak wilt, Dutch elm disease, and EAB infected trees, mark trees with paint, and record information for City data base.
• Diagnose oak wilt, Dutch elm disease, and EAB based on observed symptoms, sample collection and other resources.
• Re-inspect trees diagnosed with Dutch elm, oak wilt disease, and EAB to assure compliance with City Ordinance requirements.
• Use computer, GIS data, and field measurements to identify property boundaries and owners of diseased trees. Prepare field maps of individual sites showing diseased trees and significant land features for future re-inspections.
• Assist with other Natural Resources Division work including water resources and erosion control.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Currently enrolled in (or graduated from) forestry, natural resources, horticulture, or a closely related field.
• Possess or have the ability to obtain a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Tree Inspector License before starting.
• Experience or training with urban forestry, identifying tree diseases or pests, and making non-biased recommendations to property owners.
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public and City employees in English both orally and in writing.
