Fully funded PhD / Postdoc position on software language engineering
ISW, University of Stuttgart
“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world”. This insight formulated in 1918 by the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein also holds for today’s software languages. Many domain concepts cannot be expressed in these languages, which raises a gap between the knowledge of domain experts and software engineering. Domain-specific languages (DSLs) aim to reduce this gap by providing domain concepts within the language.

Creating DSLs and corresponding software tools is a sophisticated challenge due to the complexity of DSL implementations, limitations of modularization, reuse, and variation management techniques for DSLs.
In this research project, novel concepts and methods for the compositional development of DSLs shall be investigated, realized, and evaluated with languages from systems engineering (such as SysML v2).

Fully funded PhD / Postdoc position on MDD of Digital Twins
ISW, University of Stuttgart
Digital twins promise a better understanding and more efficient use of cyber-physical manufacturing systems. The development of digital twins requires the integration of heterogeneous models of different facts (kinematics, geometry, software, ...) of the represented original system. For this purpose, various highly specialized modeling techniques exist in practice, which are mostly syntactically and semantically incompatible.

In the context of this project, an integrated model-driven methodology for the development of digital twins for manufacturing systems will be designed, which integrates heterogeneous models of different domains and experts and enables them to be analyzed efficiently by digital twins.

Your future research area:
- Development of new concepts, methods and tools for syntactic and semantic integration of heterogeneous models of digital twins.
- Conception of an integrated analysis technique for resulting system models of digital twins.
- Application in different scenarios
- Supervision of students
- Publication of research results

Your profile:

Postdoc on formal specifications for reactive synthesis
Tel Aviv University
We invite applications for a postdoc position, to work on the development of synthesis technologies for reactive systems software engineers. The work is funded by an H2020 ERC Starting Grant (project SYNTECH).

Reactive synthesis is an automated procedure to obtain a correct-by-construction reactive system from a given specification. Examples of these systems include the software controllers of robotic systems. Despite recent advancements on the theory and algorithms of reactive synthesis, e.g., efficient synthesis for the GR(1) fragment of linear temporal logic, many challenges remain in bringing reactive synthesis technologies to the hands of software engineers. The SYNTECH project is about bridging this gap. It addresses challenges related to the change from writing code to writing specifications, and the development of tools to support a specification-centric rather than a code-centric development process.

The following keynote from FormaliSE’20 gives an overview of the project’s results to date: https://youtu.be/ig8_PbkGito

The position is available for 1 year, with a possible extension to another year. Starting date is flexible.

To apply, you must hold (or be close to complete) a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline. You should have demonstrated your research competence through high-quality publications in top conferences or journals in formal methods, modeling, or software engineering. You should also have good programming skills (mostly Java) and ability to work independently. We're specifically looking for applicants with background and interest in (1) the more formal aspects of software engineering (formal methods, logic, languages etc.) and/or (2) with interest in human aspects of software engineering (empirical user studies, user interfaces, etc.).

PhD Studentship (3 years) - Mining and modernising legacy data integration pipelines
Aston University
Applications are invited for a three year Postgraduate studentship, supported by the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, to be undertaken within the SEA Research Group at Aston University. The successful applicant will join an established experimental group working on model-driven software engineering and self-adaptive computing. The studentship is offered in collaboration with the Beazley Group, a leading specialist insurer with decades of experience in providing clients with the highest standards of underwriting and claims service worldwide.

The position is available to start in either January or April 2022, subject to negotiation.

Financial Support

This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the Home fees rate, plus a maintenance allowance of at least £15,609 in 2021/22 (subject to eligibility).

Background to the Project

The financial and insurance industries rely on the ability to integrate data from a large variety of heterogeneous sources, building profiles about entities or feeding advanced risk models, among other tasks. The volumes of data to be integrated are becoming increasingly large, to the point where traditional overnight batch processing cannot provide results quickly enough to allow for timely and informed decisions, and a stream-oriented approach that reacts to incoming data in an incremental way is needed.

This thesis will study approaches to tackle the above challenges of integrating large amounts of data from an increasingly diverse number of sources, by using stream- oriented processing and AI-based approaches. The envisioned approach would start by mining knowledge models from the existing legacy data integration pipelines, and using those knowledge models to derive a stream-oriented version of the process.
