Tribal Courts in Northern California: the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria, the Hoopa Valley Tribe, the Karuk Tribe, the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, the Yurok Tribe and the Trinidad Rancheria. NCTCC is seeking proposals from qualified professionals to serve as an Appellate Justice on contract through the NCTCC on an as-needed basis. SCOPE OF WORK The Appellate Judge will carry out the duties and obligations of the office in accordance with each trial court’s tribal Constitution and Judiciary Code. The Appellate Court system hears a wide variety of cases at the appellate court level that includes, but is not limited to child welfare, guardianships and conservatorships, custody and divorce proceedings, land disputes, election challenges, and contractual or other civil disputes. Appellate Judges are expected to be available year-round and be able to preside over oral argument hearings. EVALUATION CRITERIA Candidates must submit: (1) a cover letter, (2) resume or biographical statement, (3) two writing samples, and (4) three references. Candidates’ submissions must demonstrate that the applicant has the ability to execute the duties and obligations of an Appellate Court Judge. The terms and compensation for this position will be set forth in the negotiated agreement between the candidate and the NCTCC. Nevada Legal Services Nevada Legal Services (NLS) strengthens communities across Nevada by ensuring fairness and providing equal access to justice. We are a non-profit legal aid organization providing ... free legal services to low-income individuals and families in every county in Nevada. Our primary source of funding is through a grant from the federal Legal Services Corporation, although we receive funding from a variety of grant funders as well as private donors. Nevada Legal Services has an opening for an attorney to join our Indian Law Project. The Indian Law Project serves the 27 tribes within the State of Nevada, providing a wide range of services to both tribal members and tribal governments based upon the needs expressed by each community. Project attorneys assist tribal governments in ICWA matters and act as public defender in a number of tribal jurisdictions. Attorneys also serve individual tribal members in a wide variety of legal matters including eviction defense, estate planning, dependency representation, and economic development activities. This position can be based in any of our northern Nevada offices located in Reno, Carson City, Yerington, or Elko. Travel between NLS offices or to outlying communities may be required to meet the needs of our clients.
