Director of Archives

The University of South Carolina Lancaster, a regional campus of the University of South Carolina located approximately thirty-five (35) miles south of Charlotte, NC, seeks candidates for a tenure-track faculty librarian position as Director of Archives beginning August 16, 2022.

The Director of Archives handles collection development decisions based on knowledge of regional history and culture, awareness of archival standards and trends, and understanding user needs. The Director is responsible for:

- Initiating and participating in outreach, reference, and collection development activities for Special Collections and Archives.
- Initiating collection development by maintaining and cultivating donor relations, appraising potential collections, and acquiring/accessioning collections that meet the archive’s collection development policies
- Providing access to archival collections by creating finding aids, collection-level records, and metadata descriptions and maintains a database on collections, storage space allocations, provenance, and usage rights
- Following professional archival best practices to ensure appropriate acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation, and use of materials in the USCL collections.
- Working in a culturally sensitive manner when archiving materials such as Native American artifacts and records.

Digital Library Technician, NC Digital Collections (part time, temporary)

The Digital Services Section of the SLNC Government & Heritage Library is hiring a Digital Library Technician to work with the NC Digital Collections (digital.ncdcr.gov). This is a grant funded, temporary (through at least 6/30/22), part time (25 hrs/wk), on-site position in Raleigh. Days/hours flexible, within normal business hours (M-F 8-5). Selected candidate must wear a face mask at work and either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or commit to weekly COVID-19 testing. This position is an excellent opportunity for a graduate student interested in cultural heritage resources, digital information management, collection management, or digital libraries.

Position will: assist with digitization of state government publications, following digitization processes which include metadata creation; upload items into the digital asset management system (CONTENTdm); conduct quality checks; prepare items for preservation storage; communicate new additions to digital collections to staff/users. May work on other digital projects as needed.

Qualified candidates must possess: basic knowledge and understanding of current practices, policies, and trends in LIS related to digital and special libraries/archives; experience working with content or digital asset management systems (e.g., Drupal, WordPress, CONTENTdm); basic knowledge of metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, METS) or cataloging standards.

Management preferences: basic knowledge of standard operating systems and information technologies, current scanning hardware/software, image editing software, Adobe Suite, MS Office; strong organizational, customer service, written/verbal communication skills, attention to detail; experience using scanning devices for digitization.
