Associate Director, Scientific Communications

The Dental Academic Research Training (DART) Program provides a broadened interdisciplinary research experience for exceptionally motivated trainees in a research-intensive collaborative academic environment.

Students pursuing basic or clinical research are eligible for DART support upon admission to a UAB faculty member’s laboratory for mentor-based research training. Initial DART funding is provided by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) T90/R90 Institutional Training Grant. Scientist - Biochemistry & Molecular Biology of the Retina

We are seeking a highly motivated, creative, and bright individual with a biochemistry and molecular biology background and expertise in structure-function, structural biology and/or translational research, who is interested in studies of retinal proteins in a range of human retinal degeneration diseases.

The Scientist will complete ongoing projects regarding the contribution of PEDF to retina homeostasis. The Scientist will be instrumental in identifying and developing novel methodologies to characterize PEDF and PEDF-R proteins. These methodologies will be used for structural biological studies for the determination of the PEDF/PEDF-R complex interface. The Scientist will also participate in studies of long-term assays for compounds designed from the structural biological studies in animal models of retinal degeneration.

The project will focus on novel methods for the identification of drug repositioning candidates in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), integrating data from GWAS, omics studies, pathway databases and drug screens. Drug repositioning is the application of approved drugs in a novel disease context, and has gained increasing attention as a promising alternative to identify novel treatment options for AD.

The position will be embedded in the highly translational, interdisciplinary Englander Institute of Precision Medicine, which brings together computational biologists and clinicians in a collaborative environment. Moreover, the PostDoc researcher will be part of a vibrant network of international metabolomics and Alzheimer’s disease experts from Duke University, The Jackson Laboratory, and Helmholtz Zentrum Munich, Germany.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or be within ~6 months of holding a PhD) in the area of computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, or a related area.
