helps low-income tenants by:
Defending tenants – mostly subsidized housing residents -- against unwarranted evictions and representing individuals
and families who are facing the termination of their tenant-based rental assistance under the Housing Choice Voucher
Program.
Ensuring that tenants live in decent, safe, and sanitary housing, free from discrimination and affirmatively furthering fair
housing through litigation, negotiation, and advocacy in various venues.
Educating tenants about their rights.
Representing tenant groups and collaborating with other tenants’ rights advocates, social service agencies, and housing
authorities.
Identifying and litigating “impact cases.”

Staff Attorney - Consumer Rights

Legal Services seeks an attorney to work in its Consumer Rights Unit. This Unit provides the full range of legal services to assist homeowners at risk of mortgage foreclosure, and to defend mortgage foreclosure actions, including initiation of Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases, loan modifications and rescission actions.
The Unit also protects people from unfair financial practices by representing consumers in debt collection defense cases, defending against improper garnishment of wages or bank accounts and representing in cases involving used automobiles with a focus on financing, unfair and deceptive sales practices, warranty and odometer law violations. The attorney will be responsible for a caseload.
The attorney's duties include drafting pleadings, conducting depositions, and representing clients in court. This Unit involves significant litigation. However, the attorney will also be required to conduct client intake, conduct home visits, attend community education events, and participate in client outreach. We are seeking an attorney with a commitment to and passion for the rights of low-income clients.
State and Federal litigation experience is required.
