The Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCU Health) operates the Virginia Poison Center, which opened in 1958 as Virginia’s first poison center. We are nationally accredited as a regional poison center by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. The Virginia Poison Center’s service area includes approximately 3.3 million people and 48 acute care hospitals and urgent care centers. Services are provided to patients of all ages. The Virginia Poison Center handles approximately 30,000 calls per year, and serves as a training site for a Medical Toxicology Fellowship as well as Emergency Medicine residents and residents from other clinical specialties. The successful candidate will provide overall supervision for evaluation and treatment advice provided by the staff of the Virginia Poison Center (VPC) in the course of their duties. This position reports to the Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine and Chief, Division of Clinical Toxicology and collaborates with the Director, Virginia Poison Center.

The incumbent consults with healthcare providers from all healthcare facilities in Kentucky to provide the most appropriate and up to date pharmacotherapy recommendations. The Pharmacist-Poison Control also to assess the degree of clinical toxicity and choose the course of therapy to improve the patient’s clinical progress in the most appropriate and efficient manner. Communication is accomplished in a remote fashion with the medical team. For patients contacting the center directly, the incumbent assesses the need for medical care, provides instructions for pre-hospital management, and alerts the healthcare based medical team to the needs of the incoming patient. The incumbent also works directly with 911 and pre-hospital emergency medical providers to provide consultation for treatment and stabilization of patients on-site and during transport. The pharmacist additionally responds to medication related inquiries concerning therapy appropriateness, dosing errors, and assessment and management of adverse medication effects. Candidates are pharmacists, certified as specialists in poison information by the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) with excellent clinical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Must be able to work independently and effectively manage tasks in a fast-paced environment, communicating telephonically and simultaneously managing multiple medical databases and electronic documentation. Must be a team player with a positive attitude able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment. Must be willing to teach and supervise medical professional students and residents when on-site for clinical instruction.

Bilingual in English and Spanish, ability to read, write and speak clearly and distinctly.
Proven skill in writing for publication or brochure creation.
