Wildlife Veterinary Technician - Part-time
Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)
The veterinary technician’s role is to perform technical nursing care and to assist with implementing the daily activities of the wildlife veterinary program.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Summer Wildlife Internship - Level I

NWRI offers internships to university students to fulfill internship credit in certain fields, or for students wanting to gain hands-on experience in the fields of Wildlife Management, Veterinary Medicine, and Animal Science.

Level I Summer Internships -  Level I Internships take place at our Wildlife Center in Louisville, NE. These internships are unpaid, and all travel, food, and lodging costs are the responsibility of the intern.  We will accept applications from any current university student in the United States. Twelve Level I internships are available in the summer of 2019.

Duties include:

Intake, triage, and care of wildlife in the Wildlife Center

Answering the phones and handling public walk-ins during business hours

Educating the public about wildlife and wildlife nuisance issues

Coordinating rescues and transportation of wildlife

Animal tracking and reporting

Level I interns work an average of 21 hours per week.

Summer Wildlife Internship - Level II

NWRI offers internships to university students to fulfill internship credit in certain fields, or for students wanting to gain hands-on experience in the fields of Wildlife Management, Veterinary Medicine, and Animal Science.

Level II Summer Internships- These internships are residency internships at our satellite site in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. Interns live on site and work an average of 30 hours per week. Housing and a competitive stipend are provided to all Level II Interns.  Applicants for Level II Internships must have a minimum of 250 hours of prior wildlife rehabilitation experience, with preference given to students having previously completed NWRI's Level I Internship. Three Level II internships are available in the summer of 2019.

Duties include:

Care of wildlife in our medical unit on site.

Cleaning and care of wildlife in outside wilding cages.

Enrichment and oversight of the wilding and release of wildlife.

Participating in rescues and transportation of wildlife

Animal tracking and reporting.

Level II interns will work a minimum of 12 weeks in the summer. 16- and 20-week options may be available.

Level II interns must have previous wildlife rehabilitation experience and a valid driver's license.

Wildlife Rehabilitation Technician
Lindsay Wildlife Experience
The wildlife rehabilitation technician reports to the wildlife rehabilitation manager and is responsible for the daily rehabilitation operation; overseeing the initial and continuing treatment of injured and orphaned wildlife; supervision of volunteers on shift in the hospital and in satellite locations; helping the public with wildlife questions and concerns.

The priorities for this position are to 1) strengthen the wildlife rehabilitation program, and; 2) save the lives of injured and orphaned wild animals in our care by ensuring that treatment of all wildlife in our care is executed to the highest achievable level with the assistance of assistants, interns and volunteers in hospital and in satellite locations. The wildlife rehabilitation technician:

Is responsible for the triage, initial treatment, and continuing care of sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife; working closely with the veterinarians to implement and manage appropriate medical treatments and procedures for rehabilitating animals. Certain duties may require an RVT license.

Works in cooperation with other rehabilitation staff and volunteers to provide quality care for wild animal patients, meet department goals, and further the museum’s mission of inspiring and connecting people with wildlife in order to make the world we share healthier and safer for all of us.

Ensures that excellent customer service—to volunteers, coworkers, the public, and the patients—is consistently administered.

Wildlife Rehabilitation Intern

The unpaid internship program offers an unparalleled opportunity for hands-on experience with care and treatment of injured or orphaned native California birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Working in conjunction with over 300 volunteers, interns are given the opportunity to learn about all aspects of wildlife rehabilitation with hands-on experiences, and to educate the public on wildlife-related subjects.
There are three separate 8-week Intern Program sessions during the Peak Season:

March 31 - May 25

May 26 - July 20

July 21 - Sept. 14

The program requires completion of:

A minimum of 200 Intern Program hours during one of the 8-week sessions. Schedule is usually...

24 hours per week (three 8-hour shifts per week for the 8 weeks)

Shifts are usually 8:00 am - 4:00 pm or 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Includes day, evening, weekend, and holiday work

Alternate scheduling, including an extended timeframe into the next session, may be available by prior arrangement

All required training, including a weekly classroom session (that may require attendance on a non-shift day)

A wildlife rehabilitation Intern Project (projects may include data entry/analysis, development/revision of written protocols, developing case studies, or assisting in educational material preparation)

Upon successful completion of a Peak Season program session, you may apply to continue into the next session. During a subsequent session you would be able to gain additional, advanced skills, and could be scheduled to work directly with a staff veterinarian. There is also opportunity to extend intern activities into the Fall/Winter Season.

Bird Rehabilitation Internship - Abilene Zoo, TX
Abilene Zoological Gardens
The Abilene Zoo Bird Rehabilitation Center proudly cares for over 500 birds each year. Birds are brought to the zoo for rehabilitation due to being sick, injured, orphaned, etc. The zoo veterinary staff cares for these birds with hopes of releasing as many birds back into the wild as possible.

The 2019 summer Bird Rehab Intern would dedicate 40 hours a week and ideally work Friday-Tuesday of each week. The position will tentatively start in May and last through August, although starting/ending times are flexible. Interns will learn the essential components to bird rehabilitation – husbandry, restraint/handling, record-keeping, nutrition and feeding, criteria for release, etc. Another aspect of the internship will be to assist in commissary with food preparation for the zoo collection. If interested, the intern will also be encouraged to participate in veterinary care of all zoo animals. The intern will be required to present a presentation at the end of their internship on a topic to be decided during the first week of their internship.

Preference will be given to those currently in college for a related field or those who have completed a Bachelor’s degree. Interns will be supervised by the veterinarian, veterinary technicians, and the bird rehab keeper.
Housing in an apartment located within the veterinary hospital is provided at no cost to the Intern. The apartment may be shared with one other student of same sex. Intern must provide own transportation. The apartment houses a twin sized bunk bed, desk, microwave, mini-fridge, private bathroom, access to WIFI, alarm clock, TV, and numerous reading materials. Monthly stipend to be determined.

Raptor Rehabilitation and rescue - The rehabilitation technician reports directly to the Director of Rescue and Rehabilitation. The rehabilitation technician is responsible for assisting in the care and treatment of all birds in rehabilitation under direct supervision of the Director of Rescue and Rehabilitation. Raptor rehabilitation and rescue - The World Bird Sanctuary Rehabilitation Hospital admits approximately 400 birds a year. We accept any bird of prey as well as wading birds and pelicans. This 6 month internship is meant to be an intensive training opportunity for those interested in a career in wildlife rehabilitation. Interns will gain experience in all phases of the rehabilitation process from intake to release. Once trained the intern will function autonomously as a team member in the hospital and will be relied upon as such. The work week will consist of 5 eight hour days or 4 ten hour days depending on the caseload and time of year. Work days may include Sat, Sun and holidays.

This is one of two positions that oversees the care of the wildlife including admittance, cage cleaning, diet preparation and feeding, record keeping, medical care, and keeping animals on track as they progress through rehabilitation. Wildlife Rehabilitation Externships

Each year the Wildlife Center admits about 2,600 patients – sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals in need of medical care. The wildlife rehabilitation externships give in-depth, hands-on experience in the field of wildlife rehabilitation. Lasting a minimum of 600 hours during a 12-week period, externships focus on animal husbandry, nutrition, capture and restraint methods, hand-feeding techniques for orphaned species, wildlife laws, and release criteria.

All applicants must be self-motivated individuals with a sincere interest in working with wildlife and the ability to enthusiastically work long hours. Attention to detail, punctuality, initiative and a strong desire to learn are required, as well as at least two years of college or equivalent prior animal experience. Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is required and series must be completed prior to start date.

Externs are supervised by permitted Certified Wildlife Rehabilitators and training includes both practical experience and didactic lectures and readings. Externs are encouraged to research a topic related to wildlife rehabilitation and present this information to staff through a written paper and brief oral project upon completion of the externship.

Externship positions are offered year-round and every season offers a variety of species that require rehabilitation. Externs who start their 12-week program between January and April will spend a large amount of time hand-feeding healthy orphaned squirrels, opossums, cottontails, and raptors. In our busiest season from May to August, externs will concentrate on the labor-intense task of raising baby passerines and bats as well as bottle-feeding and browsing for fawns. Fall is raptor season and externs who start between September and December will flight condition birds of prey in addition to raising orphaned mammals. Externs in every season will work with an assortment of injured reptiles, mammals, and birds.
