Disaster Risk Reduction Policy Officer
Australian Volunteers Program
The Disaster Protection Law was revised and passed by the Parliament of Mongolia in February 2017. The newly approved law aims to strengthen three key areas that include disaster risk reduction and prevention, humanitarian coordination and recovery. Following this amended legislation, NEMA established its Disaster Risk Management Department (DRMD), with a focus on disaster risk reduction, shifting emphasis to disaster prevention and preparedness, rather than response. To further develop and reinforce the implementation of the National Action Plan of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) and National framework on Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction, the department seeks a volunteer who will bring expertise in disaster risk reduction policy and practice.

Australian volunteers are supported with return airfares, a living and accommodation allowance, training and more.

Human Rights Officer
Australian Volunteers Program
The human rights situation in Mongolia is characterized by increasing legal and policy commitments to human rights protection over the past few years, yet ongoing challenges of national implementation and limited public consultation. The Resident Coordinator (RC) and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) have found that there is a need to strengthen the human rights capacity in the Office of the RC to enable the UNCT to efficiently support the country in addressing important human rights gaps. The provision of dedicated, human rights expertise within the office will enable the RC and the UNCT to engage with key stakeholders and support their enhanced engagement with international human rights mechanisms.

Australian volunteers are supported with return airfares, a living and accommodation allowance, training and more.

PhD Scholarship (Humanitarian Shelter and Settlements)
The University of Sydney
PhD scholarship in civil engineering based in the Humanitarian Frontiers Lab in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney.

The individual will pursue research on scaling safe shelter and housing construction in the aftermath of disasters and conflicts in developing communities. Potential areas of focus may include behaviour change and household motivations for safer construction, supporting ‘self-recovery’ strategies in humanitarian shelter programming, and/or settlement and area-based approaches.
