Utrecht University and Open Universiteit We offer two PhD positions regarding the AUTOLINK project: Automated Unobtrusive Techniques for LINKing requirements and testing in agile software development. This project is a collaboration between Fabiano Dalpiaz (Utrecht University, NL) and Tanja Vos (Open Universiteit, NL). A brief description of AUTOLINK is as follows:
Software practitioners struggle with specifying requirements and testing, especially in agile development settings, where the short and frequent iterations motivate developers in taking shortcuts to allow for timely releases. A common outcome is low-quality software. AUTOLINK explores the synergies between requirements engineering and software testing and aims at their seemingly integration into agile contexts. AUTOLINK will propose techniques that assist practitioners in increasing the quality of their software by testing it against the requirements, in an unobtrusive manner and with low cost and effort. AUTOLINK employs a widely adopted artifact for expressing requirements in agile development: user stories. For testing, to avoid the writing and maintenance of test scripts, we will build upon scriptless testing, an emerging theory for testing at the user interaction level. This approach employs intelligent agents that mimic the user and decide what to test next through different action selection mechanisms. Starting from the background research and tools of the two collaborating research groups, AUTOLINK will build and experiment with automated software tools that (i) establish trace links between requirements and software, via natural language processing; (ii) enable the effortless testing of requirements, through automated scriptless testing; and (iii) increase the value over time by improving trace link accuracy and test effectiveness, via machine learning. To gather empirical evidence on the effectiveness of our tools and techniques, we are going to conduct in-vivo, longitudinal case studies within collaborating software companies.
