Postdoctoral Position in the Diagnosis of Incipient Fetlock Stress Fracture in Thoroughbred Racehorses
University of Wisconsin-Madison
A postdoctoral position in finite element modeling and mechanical testing is available in the Comparative Orthopaedic Research Laboratory (School of Veterinary Medicine) and the H... enak Laboratory (College of Engineering) at UW-Madison. The long-term goal of this research project is to reduce serious injuries in Thoroughbred racehorses, many of which result in euthanasia, by leveraging the recent development of standing CT for horses via Asto CT. The short-range goals, which the postdoc will accomplish with the research team, are to develop and validate a finite element model to identify proximal sesamoid bones with imminent risk of articular stress fracture.

A candidate with a PhD in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering or a similar field, with experience in finite element analysis is preferred. The candidate will be expected to develop expertise in finite element modeling of damage and remodeling of bone and will work with other team members to analyze and report results. The candidate will be co-supervised by a veterinary clinician-scientist and an engineer and will form part of an interdisciplinary team. The project is funded through the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

Applications for the position should include a CV, cover letter stating research background and interests, and contact information for three professional references. Please send applications to Corinne Henak (chenak@wisc.edu).

• Explore the biomechanical mechanisms involved in angle-closure, optic neuropathy, and other glaucomatous changes.
• Collaborate with a diverse team of researchers in the lab.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
• Background in solid mechanics, biomechanics, and mechanobiology.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research, publish in high-impact journals, and present at national and international conferences.
