Renewable Energy Systems group, led by Prof. Evelina Trutnevyte, at the University of Geneva is looking to fill several PhD or PostDoc positions in the field of renewable energy s... ystems, especially with the focus on energy systems modeling or socio-technical analysis. The successful PhD or PostDoc candidate(s) will have an opportunity to work on research questions that are designed based on their backgrounds and interests within the on-going projects of the group. The umbrella topics include, but are not limited to: modeling for a transition to high shares of renewable energy, integration of insights from social sciences into techno-economic modeling, probabilistic methods in energy foresight, and spatial energy analysis and modeling.

In order to qualify for the position, the candidates are required to have:
• Completed or nearly completed Master’s or PhD degree;
• Less than 4 years of PostDoc experience (for PostDoc applicants only)
• Proven knowledge of energy technology, energy systems, energy and climate policy, or socio-technical transitions;
• Experience with quantitative analysis and ideally familiarity with modeling energy systems at a national or continental scale, e.g. using Python or Matlab;
• Experience with integration of insights from social sciences into modeling;
• Peer-reviewed journal publications as first author (for PostDoc applicants only);
• Excellent English skills in understanding, speaking, and writing;
• French, German or other European languages are an advantage;
• Readiness to move to Geneva.

Advance integrated assessment modeling and climate mitigation pathway analysis

Key Responsibilities:
Lead research in the NEWPATHWAYS project, working closely with Prof....  Dr. Elmar Kriegler and coordinating integrated assessment model comparisons.
Develop and analyze climate change mitigation pathways using REMIND-MAgPIE.
Contribute strategically to international climate policy analysis at PIK and mentor junior researchers.
Create policy briefs and communication tools to share insights from scenario analyses.
Engage in stakeholder dialogues and outreach with international climate policymakers.

Requirements:
A post-graduate degree (PhD/Dr) in economics, political science, ecology, geography, physics, engineering, operations research, environmental sciences, or a related field.
Strong analytical skills with a passion for applied modeling.
Proven track record in publishing and presenting scientific work.
Programming experience (knowledge of R and/or GAMS is a plus).

Integrated assessment modeller

The candidate will join an international and interdisciplinary team to contribute to developing our suite of integrated assessment models, which include detailed-process climate-e... nergy-economy models, energy system models and macro-economic models. The successful applicant will work on a model development project, investigating climate change solutions and improving the representation of climate change mitigation and impacts in our models. Specific tasks included but are not limited to:
• Integration of climate change adaptation and impacts into climate-economy models at regional and national level.
• Developing methods to represent biodiversity and ecosystems in integrated assessment models.
• Capturing the resources and material requirements of the low-carbon transition.
• Contribution to developing the open-source integrated assessment models WITCH and RICE+.
• Write and contribute to scientific articles and science-policy reports derived from the above work, and present those at scientific workshops and conferences.

We are looking for a motivated person with the following requirements:
• PhD in economics, applied mathematics, environmental engineering, or any related fields to integrated assessment models.
• Modelling experience using modelling language (GAMS, AMPL, JUMP) and fluency in programming language such as python, julia or R.
• Fluency in English (Italian not needed), good presentation and writing skills.
• Willingness to travel to project meetings and to conferences.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse environment committed to high-quality research.
• Desirable: Experience with integrated assessment modelling.

The appointment period will be initially 24 months, renewable for two additional years pending a positive evaluation. Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher.
