Youth Violence Prevention Educator
Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence
Coordinates a team of high school peer educators and adult mentors in a long-standing collaborative program, Peers Building Justice, to implement violence-prevention curriculum for middle and high school students throughout the Boulder Valley School District. Specific topics include gender violence (dating violence, sexual assault/harassment) and other forms of oppression, gender justice, and healthy relationships. Organizes and supports youth in primary prevention and social justice activities. This position is also responsible for the overall administration of all youth-based educational outreach at SPAN, including program evaluation, database management, and curriculum development. The Youth Violence Prevention Educator will work primarily with students, parents, school systems, and agencies serving middle and high school youth. Curriculum presentations to elementary students, their parents, and teachers/administrators may also be included.

What You’ll Do Inside the Classroom
• Create a safe, trusting classroom environment for all YESS students
• Develop and maintain effective relationships with students
• Facilitate every aspect of the YESS Mentoring Program, including but not limited to the YESS Institute social-emotional curriculum, academic skill building, leadership training, and individualized tutoring and homework catch-up
• Support multicultural leadership development of peer mentors and coach them in delivering the YESS Institute curriculum and serving as positive role models within the school
• Recruit, hire, and supervise multiple Youth Mentor Leaders that will serve as a student employees for the YESS Institute
• Match selected mentors and mentees effectively to ensure maximum program impact
• Check mentee grades weekly to track performance and missing assignments, then communicate this information to families
• Adhere to school classroom management protocol
• Write letters of recommendation for students, when appropriate
• Refer students to outside resources, as needed

What You’ll Do Outside the Classroom
• Maintain and track records, participant database, evaluation data and other required documentation of all students
• Recruit, match, develop, and oversee multiple classes of mentors and mentees
• Recruit, hire, and supervise Youth Mentor Leaders that will serve as a student employee for the YESS Institute
• Acquire all classroom supplies and technology, as needed
• Collaborate with counselors, schedulers, administrators, and other stakeholders in the school to maintain class roster stability
• Communicate with teachers to stay apprised of classroom and academic performance of all YESS participants
• Act as an educational advocate for all students in the YESS program
• Attend all staff meetings and PD opportunities within the school
• Join the school’s attendance, behavioral, intervention, and prevention teams
• Create publicity within the school and community by highlighting student successes and impact
• Partner with Westminster Future Center to ensure students receive college and career support
• Coordinate with YESS College Navigator to arrange college visits, when appropriate
• Assist YESS seniors with college and other post-secondary research, applications, and scholarships
• Collaborate with community resource partners to provide support to peer mentors in their academic advancement
• Enhance parent engagement through culturally responsive techniques
• Communicate student achievements to families throughout the school year
• Attend all parent/teacher nights to meet families and build relationships
• Seek affordable community resources to support program
• Partner with other service organizations to create service learning opportunities for YESS participants
• Maintain positive culture within the YESS Institute by participating in all organization-sponsored meetings and professional development opportunities

• Proven experience working in an under-performing school
• Commitment to youth development and not-for-profit work
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience
