Postdoc in statistical mechanics-based biophysics at multiple scales
Oregon Health & Science University
The Zuckerman group of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon, USA is likely to be recruiting a quantitative postdoctoral researcher to work on one or more of the following: (i) statistical mechanics simulation and analysis methods for protein folding and/or binding, focusing on the weighted ensemble approach; (ii) a project with experimental collaborators investigating structural heterogeneity and allostery in a multivalent protein system, potentially involving molecular simulations and Bayesian inference from experimental data; and (iii) trajectory analysis of cell dynamics in collaboration with cancer biologists. Applicants must have conducted statistical mechanics-related research using numerical techniques. Applicants should submit a CV, a list of references, and a ½ page maximum mini-research proposal on any project of potential mutual interest. The proposal is meant to demonstrate academic and research preparation, and so need not conform precisely to the list of projects above. The Zuckerman group is both NSF and NIH-funded, engaging in a range of theoretical and applied biophysical research efforts. Portland is very bike friendly, scenic, and has a vibrant culture around music, coffee, beer, and food. The Pacifc Ocean, Cascade mountains, and the Columbia gorge are all less than 90 minutes away. Portland is famous for its political activism, but this is overwhelmingly confined to very small parts of the city. Note: Final approval for the funding for this position is highly probable but still pending, so the overall process may take two months or more.

Postdoctoral position in the theoretical shape morphing mechanics of liquid crystal elastomers, Cambridge
Cambridge University Engineering Department
Dr John Biggins is establishing a new experimental and theoretical research activity in the area of liquid crystalline elastomers and glasses (LCE/Gs). These remarkable soft-solids can undergo large reversible and programmed shape changes upon heating or illumination, and the group will target novel mechanics and "artificial-muscle" applications in shape-changing devices. By patterning the alignment direction within and LCE/G, one can achieve a complex shape changes on activation This research associate will be a theoretical/computational group member, focusing on the geometry and mechanics of programmed shape changes.

The key responsibilities and duties are to design patterns of LCE alignment that deliver strong and useful shape changes, and explore the use of patterned LCE/G actuation to trigger and tailor mechanical instabilities such as snapping, wrinkling and creasing. The post holder will elucidate fundamental mechanical principles, and also design mechanical components such as grabbers, valves and haptic pixels. The post holder will also need to engage effectively and productively with the experimentalists who will realize and test their designs.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role will include theoretical or computational experience of large deformation mechanics (ideally including mechanical instabilities) and, ideally, differential geometry and inverse problems. Applicants must also have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Science or Engineering.

PostDoc positions in fluid dynamics
Ben-Gurion University
Explore the dynamics, stability and pattern formation in thin-film flows of complex fluids under non-uniform and/or time-dependent boundary conditions. One motivation is to understand ice-sheet flow due to interaction with the ocean and lubrication networks.
Position i: Theoretical fluid dynamics
Position ii: Experimental fluid dynamics
