Industry and circularity modeling at PIK Potdam (close to Berlin)
Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research
We soon open this position. Please write to ueckerdt@pik-potsdam.de if you want to get notified as soon as the announcement is online.

Researcher position: Modeling the global transformation and circularity in energy-intensive industries such as steel, cement, and plastics.
(PhD and Postdoc, 3-4 years)

What low-carbon processes will dominate future primary steelmaking – hydrogen or CCS? How deep can we cut emissions of plastics through recycling? Do you enjoy programming and modeling?

Joining our team, you will model and evaluate transformation options and scenarios for the industry transformation with our REMIND-IAM and our material-flow model. You will engage with industry stakeholders, international research partners and policy makers and discuss the implications of our research for policy instruments, the transformation in different world regions and global material trade.
Researcher position: Global energy transition modeling (m/f/d)
Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research
https://www.pik-potsdam.de/de/aktuelles/stellen/researcher-position-global-energy-transition-modeling-m-f-d

Performing global energy transition scenario analysis with the integrated assessment model REMIND accounting for sector-specific transformation opportunities and challenges in energy supply, transport, buildings and industry;

Participation with the REMIND model in international research efforts to explore transformation pathways to net-zero energy systems in line with the Paris Climate Goals;

Collaboration with national and global modelling teams from around the world and participation in stakeholder dialogues;

Development and validation of the global REMIND model together with other researchers working with the REMIND model;

Analysis of sector transitions in the light of national and international climate policy efforts as well as technological progress in key mitigation technologies.

Requirements:

Master’s Degree or PhD in Physics, Engineering, Economics, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, System Sciences or a related field;
Excellent analytical skills and interest in theoretical and applied modeling;
Programming experience;
For postdoctoral candidates: demonstrated experience in publishing and presenting scientific work;
Knowledge of R, Python and/or GAMS are assets;
Experience with energy systems analysis or integrated assessment modeling of climate change is an asset.

Post-Doctorate RA - Energy, Emissions, Environmental Modeling
Joint Global Research Institute, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is soliciting applications for a postdoctoral position to work on integrated assessment modeling and in particular, on topics related to energy, emissions, and minerals modeling. The successful applicant will lead the analysis using the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM; http://jgcri.github.io/gcam-doc/index.html). Specifically, this researcher will work on topics such as modeling of energy, agricultural, and minerals trade; detailed representation of liquid fuels in GCAM; and representation of carbon dioxide removal in GCAM. In addition, the researcher will also work on topics related to the application of GCAM for national and international decarbonization strategies and analyses of climate and emission pledges and policies (e.g. nationally determined contributions and the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act). The researcher is expected to lead and contribute to multiple peer-reviewed journal publications on this work. There will be many opportunities to work with the multi-disciplinary team within JGCRI as well as collaborators in other national labs and universities.
