This chair is named for Paul Batalden, MD, a co-founder of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and an early leader of The Dartmouth Institute with John E. Wennberg, MD. The Batalden Professor will lead an interdisciplinary effort with faculty and students across the various schools, centers, and institutes at Dartmouth, Dartmouth Health, and other partner health systems to accelerate the transformation of U.S. healthcare to achieve our mission of improving public health, reducing disparities, and creating high performing health systems.
Faculty at The Dartmouth Institute are leaders in the study of health policy, healthcare organization and financing, and improvement of clinical practice with impacts spanning three decades. As an interdisciplinary research organization, we seek candidates with experience working with and mobilizing colleagues across disciplines. Disciplines reflected among our primary faculty include anthropology, biostatistics, decision science, health economics, health services research, medicine (primary care, pediatrics, hospice, and palliative medicine), social work, sociology, and systems engineering. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of health economics and regulatory science, with a focus on improving evidence generation, healthcare access, efficiency, and equity. The PDF will report to Senior Scientist and Associate Professor Dr. Dean Regier within the BC Cancer Research Institute and University of British Columbia. The primary appointment will be at the BC Cancer Research Institute. A cross appointment at the School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia may also be granted.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the management and conduct of regulatory science and health economic studies, including a diverse range of mixed methods, and health economics and health services research studies, largely focusing on precision medicine and rare or life-threatening diseases.
The successful post-doc will have the opportunity to lead and support several research projects and will be trained in a variety of methods that inform policy and decision-making throughout the health technology life-cycle. Our research lab focuses on health economics, regulatory science, and preference elicitation. The successful PDF will have expertise in leading manuscript development using methods suitable for regulatory science, implementation, policy, or economic analyses, including but not limited to qualitative research, discrete choice experiments, comparative effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and causal inference.

The Bioethics fellowship focuses on research and clinical ethics as well as empirical research methods. The Decision Sciences fellowship focuses on understanding and improving the health care communication and decisions made by both patients and providers.
CBSSM postdoctoral fellows collaborate on established projects and are encouraged to conduct independent research with an emphasis on study inception, manuscript writing, and applying for grants. CBSSM’s resources and collaborative support provide fellows with mentorship, expose them to multiple methodological approaches to research in decision making and bioethics, and enable fellows to build their own research programs. Postdoctoral fellows contribute to the scholarly mission and intellectual life at the Center by regularly attending Center research seminars and working groups and by participating in a rotation on our ethics consultation service. This NIH R01 project seeks to generate evidence on the long-term population health and economic effects of four highly promising interventions designed to reduce food and nutrition insecurity, as outlined in the 2022 White House Initiative on diet-related diseases.
Using a dynamic microsimulation model, the project will estimate how these interventions impact long-term health outcomes, disparities across racial-ethnic and socioeconomic groups, and cost-effectiveness. The scholar will be part of a multidisciplinary team conducting cutting-edge research to address food insecurity, diet-related diseases (e.g., obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease), and health disparities in the U.S. population.
The scholar will further their research and training agenda through formal mentorship, workshops and seminars at the University of Chicago, and professional development activities, such as attending local and national conferences. To help continued growth as an independent researcher, the scholar will have a protected time of 20% FTE (1 working day per week) to develop their research agenda and prepare for an NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) or equivalent award.
