Second Mate

Under the direction of the first mate, the second mate carries out daily operations of the vessel as a deckhand/educator, both during maintenance periods and underway, education or otherwise. In addition, the second mate assumes the duties of the first mate in their absence. This includes directing and supervising the crew in safe daily deck operations and maintenance, per orders of the captain. The second mate must also be prepared to act as designated engineer, in the engineer’s absence. The second mate may act as relief cook.

The Clearwater is now accepting applications for the position of Engineer for the 2021 season (April 5 - September 19).Under the direction of the Captain, the Engineer is responsible for the care and maintenance of the vessel’s mechanical and electrical systems. This includes daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of the main engine, the on-deck engine and fire pump system, the fresh water system, the bilge pumping system, the refrigerator system and electrical systems. The Engineer is responsible for regular checks of the vessel’s safety and emergency gear. They are responsible for the maintenance of Engineering tools and equipment, keeping the engine room properly stowed, maintaining engine room logs and reports inventory needs to Captain. The Engineer is expected to train the crew in relief Engineer duties. At the end of their season, the Engineer is expected to turn over a season’s end report. While not performing engineering duties they are responsible for daily vessel operation as an Educator Deckhand.

They maintain and monitor a list of maintenance projects and supplies. They maintain tools and equipment, keep the bosun’s locker properly stowed, and report inventory needs to the captain. The Clearwater is now accepting applications for the position of Cook for the 2021 season (April 5 - September 19).The Cook is responsible for planning and serving three well-balanced meals per day for all crew. Meals must be planned within budget limitations and time constraints, taking into account special dietary needs and with a preference for local and sustainable food. The Cook maintains adequate provisions including propane supplies. They work closely with the Captain and Mate on meal scheduling and provisioning. The galley equipment and cooking utensils must be properly cleaned and maintained and the galley properly stowed. The Cook is expected to participate on deck when necessary. They are expected to train the crew in relief Cook duties. The Cook is expected to develop a working knowledge of the vessel and emergency procedures.

Deckhand/Educator
Sultana Education Foundation
The Sultana Education Foundation is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Deckhand/Educator aboard the 1768 replica schooner SULTANA based in Chestertown, Maryland and operating on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Responsibilities include vessel operations, maintenance, and serving as an educator in the Foundation’s Environmental Literacy, summer, and Public Sail programs. This is a paid position with housing provided in the Foundation’s shoreside Staff Housing Facility in Chestertown. Partial board is also provided with this position. Previous experience in traditional sailing and education are preferred but not required.

The Sultana Education Foundation and the schooner SULTANA will operate in 2021 adhering to current Federal, State and local guidance related to Covid-19. Details will be provided during the application process. Circumstances permitting, the Foundation intends to have deckhand/educators arrive in Chestertown in early May for uprigging in anticipation of a mid-June start to SULTANA’s sailing season.

Onboard Education Coordinator (Program Coordinator)

The Onboard Education Coordinator is a full time live aboard position beginning on April 3rd and runs through the end of October. Clearwater seeks an Onboard Education Coordinator that can be flexible as we navigate these uncharted waters; and be prepared to jump in and assist with virtual, onboard, and onland education programming as needed.

Responsibilities:
Lead 2, three-hour environmental edu programs with up to 25 passengers (note that sails normally include up to 50 passengers but we are reducing our passengers by 50% as a precautionary COVID measure);
Training crew and education interns in the Sailing Classroom Education Curriculum each week;
Under the guidance of, and in coordination with, the Captain, First Mate, and Program Director, be responsible for the continued educational preparedness and community of crew and interns;
Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, and in coordination with the Outreach and Engagement Manager, engage in outreach to schools, community groups, and the public through social media, tabling, and educational programs;
Coordinates with the Marketing Team to create regular social media and video content with a focus on Hudson Valley ecology, history, and community;
Operate and maintain a trawl net, plankton tow, water quality data equipment, and monitor aquarium life;
Coordinate and implement, under the guidance of the Program Director, multi-day Youth Empowerment Programs onboard the vessel in July and August;
Maintain a strong line of communication with the office staff and marketing team (for social media coordination) and attend weekly staff meetings.
