The scope of PADS includes all topics where discrete processes are analyzed, reengineered, and/or supported in a data-driven manner (www.pads.rwth-aachen.de). Process-centricity is combined with an array of Data Science techniques (machine learning, data mining, visualization, AI, etc.). The main focus is on Process Mining (including process discovery, conformance checking, performance analysis, predictive analytics, operational support, and process improvement). The ambition is to realize scientific breakthroughs, which will help organizations to turn event data into business and societal value.
The PADS group works on the whole spectrum ranging from theoretical research to applied research, also within the context of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology (FIT) and the Cluster of Excellence Internet of Production (IoP).
RWTH Aachen University is one of the leading technical universities in Germany (typically ranked in top-3). It is one of the so-called Universities of Excellence, and the Department of Computer Science at RWTH is one of the strongest in Europe with over 30 professors.

PhD Positions on Machine Learning for Process Mining (ML4ProM)
Process and Data Science (PADS) group @ RWTH Aachen University The federal state government of North Rhine-Westphalia created a new initiative to strengthen the research in AI and ML. The project Machine Learning for Process Mining (ML4ProM) ... will have two PhD working on the interplay between process mining and machine learning, combining the expertise of RWTH Aachen University & Universität Bielefeld. These PhDs will be part of a larger ML/AI network called Data-NInJa (around 15 PhDs in total).
The scope of the PADS group at RWTH includes all topics where discrete processes are analyzed, reengineered, and/or supported in a data-driven manner. The main focus is on Process Mining (including process discovery, conformance checking, performance analysis, predictive analytics, operational support, and process improvement). This project aims to combine this with the ML expertise of Prof. Dr. Barbara Hammer in Bielefeld.

Software Engineering is a broad discipline and candidates from all of its diverse areas will be considered, including the areas that are at the center of the enormous changes that software development has had in recent years, such as the architecture of Software Systems, Smart Systems, Cloud Computing, Mobile Devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). Research experience in topics that are already being addressed by faculty members is desirable; these include reliable and secure architectures for Cloud Computing, Self-managed Distributed Systems, architectures optimized for Big Data processing, and architectures for both services and microservices. Postdoctoral Researcher in Process Mining for Automated Process Improvement
University of Tartu We are looking for a recent or soon-to-be PhD graduate to join the BPM Research Group @ University of Tartu as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
This position is part of the... European Research Council project "The Process Improvement Explorer" (PIX). The goal of this project is to develop algorithms to analyze business process execution data in order to automatically discover improvement opportunities and to estimate their potential impact.
If retained for this position, you will develop methods to automatically identify changes to the decision logic of a business process that are likely to enhance its performance along one or more performance measures. Among other directions, you will investigate the use of rule mining and cost-sensitive learning, in conjunction with process mining techniques, to fine-tune branching conditions in a business process. Your research will lead to novel methods, which will be validated on real datasets and case studies, and incorporated into an open-source tool for automated process improvement.
You will become part of a highly dynamic team focused on business process management and process mining. In recent years, the group has earned five best paper awards at international venues, two test-of-time awards, one best student paper award, and two best demo awards. The team has also contributed to the successful commercial spin-off of the Apromore open-source process mining platform. The position will be fixed-term for a period of up to three years. The remuneration package is competitive by European standards.

The PhD position is part of the SNF project “ProMiSE: Process Mining Support for End-users”. Within the ProMiSE project, we aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of analysts engaging in process mining and, more precisely, in exploratory data analysis tasks. We will collect empirical evidence from practice and develop methodological guidance and software-based operational support for assisting novice analysts during process mining. The PhD position is part of an engineering-oriented project that conducts research at the intersection of process mining and IoT. The project aims at developing methods and techniques for discovering process from IoT sensor data (e.g., produced by a smart factory) and for process mining in IoT settings. With this project we aim at bridging the gap between process-oriented and event-driven systems as they can often be found in an IoT context.
