Natural Area Land Management GIS Specialist – Full Time Limited Term

Work activities include, but not limited to, bringing digital data into a GIS, collecting location data with GPS units, analyzing GIS data, and using herbicide in control of invasive plants. Paid Internships - Restoration Ecology (Summer 2022)

Looking for field experience in natural area restoration and management? Four paid internships in restoration ecology are available through the Empire-Sauk Chapter. These are full-time positions for 12 weeks from Tuesday, May 31, through Friday, August 19, 2022. Applicants should be in college, at the sophomore level or higher, and have a demonstrated interest in restoration ecology or the conservation/management of rare species and ecosystems. The work will take place at four high-quality nature preserves in western Dane County and eastern Iowa County near the villages of Mount Horeb, Mazomanie, Blue Mounds, and Barneveld. Restoration Landscape Technician

Job Description:

Cardno is looking for Ecological Restoration Field Technicians. Projects will involve field labor and technical work. A typical work day consists of 8‐10 hours of in‐the‐field physical labor although, following the requirements of specific assignments, may include irregular hours. This position requires often overnight travel.

Responsibilities include:

> Implementing restoration project work at the ground level under the direction of a Field Supervisor and/or Project Manager

> Native planting with of heavy equipment, seeding, erosion control installation, herbicide application, woody invasive species removal, prescribed fire or any other activities necessary with field implementation of ecological restoration projects

> Document daily field activities and organization of materials

> Comply with all company and client safety requirements

> Follow corporate policies, operate through the proper management channels, and act in the best interest of the company

Basic Qualifications:

> Ability to traverse wet and rugged terrain in often diverse and inclement weather conditions while carrying up to 50 lbs.

> Experience in native and invasive species plant identification

> Experience operating basic hand tools and smaller equipment such as backpack sprayers, augers, chainsaws, and brushcutters

> Experience operating truck/trailer combination

> Availability and willingness to travel overnight for multiple days per week, occasionally more than a week, and adaptable to schedule changes upon short notice

> Will work in an environment where safety is at the forefront of all operations

> Technicians will be required to obtain Commercial Pesticide Applicator's Certifications in Categories A, F, and J

> Valid Driver's License with the ability to drive a company vehicle and an acceptable motor vehicle record

Assistant to the Carleton College Arboretum Manager

NATURE PRESERVE WORKER

Location: Eagle Valley Nature Preserve, Glen Haven, WI.
A remote 1450-acre preserve in the southwest corner of Wisconsin is owned by Kohler Co. and the Kohler Trust for Preservation and is managed as a wildlife sanctuary to preserve its natural character and integrity. The preserve serves as a perennial winter roost site for Bald Eagles.

Starting Rate of Pay: Approx. $13.90 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Full benefits available including vacation, medical, dental, vision, pension, 401K option.

Qualifications: Must be ambitious, punctual, responsible individual, with good attention to detail, capable of working outside in all kinds of weather. Must be able to perform strenuous physical duties (lifting, digging, steep climbing, etc.). Vehicle/machinery maintenance and repair skills with basic construction and landscape knowledge highly desirable. Must be versatile and can perform the safe use of 4x4 pick-ups, ATVs, UTVs, Bobcat, mowers, chainsaws, brush cutters, and a variety of hand tools.

Education: High school education or some college biology coursework and/or field experience preferred.

Duties: Primary duties include landscape and trail maintenance and improvements (e.g., pruning, mulching, weeding, mowing), building and equipment maintenance and repair, snow removal, firewood production, and patrolling property to deter trespass and maintain an undisturbed preserve. Secondary duties might include habitat restoration and management including prescribed burns, noxious weed control by herbicide or mechanical means, brush/tree removal; wildlife research and management; other duties assigned by the Preserve Manager. Provides a valuable career opportunity for diverse work experience in the scenic Mississippi River bluff country of southwest WI.
